Sorry if this has been asked before but,

I've not had the Landy long and really love it.
The guy I bought it off has been running it without the rear drive shaft to 'improve the MPG'.
So, with winter coming and I want my 4x4 to be 4x4 I've put the shaft back on today.

But

When I put the steering on full lock and slowly drive around the pub car park the car seems to lurch a bit and there is a knocking noise.

What's up with it?

Thank you for any advice you can give

Sadly I don't think he disconnected the rear drive shaft to improve MPG.
Sounds like he did it because the VCU/IRD are fubar.

Bugga.

While driving it's fine it's just on full lock.

Not sure what a VCU or IRD is?
But sounds like a big job?

It's common for sellers of Freelander's with 4X4 issues to remove the propshafts. This can hide the fault and they fob the next owner with the line "props removed for fuel economy". In actual fact there's absolutely no Mpg advantage to removing the props.

The VCU is the large cylindrical thing hanging under the middle of the car. It has a prop shaft at each end, joining the front and rear together.
The IRD is the Freelander's equivalent of a transfer box. It's where the front prop bolts to.
I'd remove the props again and seek help from Bell Engineering.

Humph, do you have the contact details for Bell?

Press the play button then the Youtube button - Hippo has only allowed it to play on the real Youtube not embedded in other sites.

Aww man it gets worse.
Just trawling youtube and it talks about this issue and a number of people have simply removed the prop shaft like mine.
But
They've mentioned they fitted a blanking off plate on the back of the IRD.
Mine didn't have a blanking plate?
