At the time I made that guard, it was whatever was going cheap or free. It actually only cost me £9.99 and that was to buy a jigsaw lol :D
Do you know what is a good thickness to use off hand? I will see what I can get hold of. If not check plate maybe just aluminium sheet or something. I must know someone with something hanging about. Hmmm

Well after 2 1/2 years without a Freelander, I'm back. :D

Some may remember my old Freelander. Was well modified, and spent most its time on green lanes. Really miss it.

And this is the new one. Picked last night, will get some better pics when I've got time.

Already has a egr bypass valve fitted and BMW crankcase filter mod.
Ordered, roof rails, Silicone hoses, tailored mats, a spare 17" alloy, roof ariel, a fascia adapter and audio harness.
Needs a drop link, few scuffs to sort out and a few other bits. :)
Get away. Its the same car surely

I will see what I can find then. I am sure I have seen sheet metal somewhere recently. No rallying unless it's accidental! Regarding oil change I am sure this will be on another thread but with the original plastic sump guard on, to change the engine oil I undo the 2 rear undertray bolts, push a short length of 4 inch flat profile roof gutter up to sump plug and drain it into a suitable container. Front end jacked up a bit, yes on stands, sump plug loosened with extension, happy days. Not had an oil slick yet. Suppose I will have to do it properly with metal sump guard on haha
Not if you make it like this, 6 easy to get at bolts and the new part drops down. :)

I don't think it is as strong as JC600's checker plate but so far has had the full weight if the car sitting on a rock at least once (not when it was on Bertie but on a standard Freelander) with no issues.

Think mine is 4mm Chequer plate, 6mm Inc the raised parts. Sure your find something. :)

Haha......i wish, you'd have saved me some cash. :D

Job for the weekend, replace rotten socket holder and all screws/bolts. Thought I'd might as well change to a ball and pin at the same time. Also need to paint the tow bar. :)

I love this forum and you guys. Another great sump guard. How is the front edge held in there? Oh, I see, you undo the bolts and the guard levers down? Like it but I have no welding kit or ability. I bet I can find a man who can. Or rivnuts did I read somewhere? What sheet did you use? Not that I am becoming obsessed with sheet metal or anything ha. I am beginning to think I should have paid the bloke who did the welding on my bike...it was a few years ago.... maybe he has forgotten. Or did I pay him?

I used sheet alloy, but it is really too light (only a couple of mm) hence the extra reinforcing but don't think it would take too much abuse.

If you don't mind having to paint the guard. Then steel plate is the cheapest and strongest material to use. 2.5mm plate steel is strong and reasonably easy to use. It can be reinforced with RHS in critical areas too. 5mm steel is stronger still, but a bugger to bend without a sheet metal folder. Steel can be cut and welded easily to form more complex shapes too. The downside is rust. However cote it correctly and it'll outlast the body.

Wish it would stop chucking it down with rain, sleet or snow......want to go out and get this all fitted. :)

Just go and play in the snow;)

Can't mate, on 24hr call out.....seems to snow when I'm call and can't go out. :(
I did get soaked in rain and oil for 3.5 hrs earlier, changing a main pump hose on a jet vac unit. That was fun lol :D

I don't miss being on call. It was the worst part of working at the garage. I didn't mind the breakdowns to much. But hated dragging smashed up cars out of ditches or fields at 3am, because the driver was ****ed.

No, that would **** me off too.

Got my ball and pin fitted with new back plate and bolts. Was fun lol, with the rusty bolts and screws. Just need to paint the tow bar at the weekend. :D

Quick daylight pic, won't be getting painted soon though. Torn the supraspinatus muscle in my shoulder that has affected the nerves in my arm. It's been sore for a few days, but got called out to a awkward job at 1am and was in agony. And couldn't get out of bed, in constant pain. Well won't be soon, been given codine phosphate and diamazepam. I'll save a later for before bed though lol.

Had to go to my brothers work yesterday as one of my tyres was leaking from the rim. Sorted quickly and sealed up. :)
Whilst on the ramp, noticed the diff seal leaking. Level OK, but definitely needs doing. Also looked at my fuel tank cradle, that's absolutely hanging. Tubes are on there way out. So will hopefully get those done next week by my brothers work. :)

Common issue unfortunately but some cheap replacements available. No idea how good they are as I've always repaired mine with new plates I made myself.

Bearmach ones seem to be ok, I only use genuine seals. It's beyond repair as tube sections have gone......Treated and painted my last one. :)
