Hello everyone. I have a Freelander SE Tech SD4 Auto (2014). When in gear and accelerating, my front wheel sounds as if it is wheelspinning (I've been told this is impossible) but it has indeed scrubbed out my front tyre). What is happening, is the wheel is going round, but something is pressing on whatever makes it go round (yes, I'm a woman!) trying to stop it! Its not the brakes. I took it to a LR specialist who thought it may be the gear box. The did a torque conversion flush, but this made no difference. I took it to a gearbox specialist, who could not fault the gearbox but suggested an engine fault. I took it to an engine specialist, who said they could not fault the engine. It has now been to 4 garages, and no-one knows what is wrong with it. Im at a loss as to know what to do now. Anyone?

Yes, you have been told correct, this is impossible.

To prove it, there was an almost identical report a couple of weeks back!

It is highly unlikely to be the gearbox, and I can't conceive how the engine could do this. Its obviously "a thing" as 2 very similar reports. Possibly the brake on the other side binding so more torque is going through the wheel that is spinning. Other than that, I'd have thought it must be something in the suspension, diff or 4wd system.

Get the tyre checked it's self, is the wheel balanced, is the wheel buckled, tyre pressure correct, as above the brake could be binding, as the ABS been checked, have you anyone tried changing the wheel over for another one off the car to see if you get the same effect.

I'm thinking that the PTU splines have stripped (normally happens before 100k miles), which then effectively disconnects the drive to the rear.

Are any of the alloy wheels hot to touch in the centre near to where the plastic cap is, after taking it for a drive?
At what speed does the fault happen?
Does the fault vary with speed?
When emergency braking does it pull to one side?
