Morning, I own an early Discovery Sport. Its on a 15 plate with the 2.2 Litre engine, 9 speed Auto & its done 68900 miles. I am looking for some guidance and advice please. I have a number of faults with the Transmission Control module 3 of which relate to mechanical failure. There are 3 faults with the Powertrain Control Module 1 is data memory failure, 1 is transmission torque reduction request signal malfunction the other is starter relay circuit..
Which currently mean I am unable to drive the car as on my last outing I literally ground to a halt on a nearby ring road. On this occasion the gear rotor descended and I was nearly stuck in park mode. Hazards on. Luckily I managed to turn engine off, wait, turn on and it reset itself, the rotor rised, I put in D and drove home. Symptoms seem to be sharp, jerky gear changes, once or twice has struggled to engage, sometimes high revs and low speed but then will engage a gear and seem ok for a bit.. but clearly all is far from well..

I'm wondering if maybe a software update might work? But obviously the gearbox itself might be shagged. A gearbox from main dealer is not an option as on back order with no eta, its vastly expensive anyway. So I'm thinking the gearbox could be rebuilt by an automatic transmission specialist despite LR saying its a sealed unit.
Has anyone had this done? or could anyone advise a company or specialist who could do this or assist please?
A 2nd hand gearbox is not an option as it wouldn't be programmed to the vehicle and if not done properly could spell the end of the vehicle.

I think I will replace the battery as a first port of call and take it from there. I'm looking for some sensible advice please.
Many thanks in advance James

Afternoon, I have an update.. I replaced the battery on my Disco Sport and whilst it definitely improved the situation it didn't solve it.. changing the battery was a pig of a job. Whilst the battery was outputting a decent voltage its cold cranking ability was 300 when it should've been 800. Thus, conclusion was battery goosed.

However, I then took the Disco Sport to a trusted and experienced mechanic who tested the gearbox oil level and found it to be approx. 2 litres short and duly refilled as required. All issues previously experiened are gone, but sadly the gearbox is leaking..
I have had some of the seals replaced but a leak persists.. anyone got any thoughts on this? I guess it depends where the leak is actually coming from? .. I fear a trip to a gearbox specialist is required as it might be gearbox out to inspect / replace seals or gaskets as needed.. apparently a few need to be done this way. Also I believe there is a tube and some kind of splined shaft!?
Wondering if anyone has experience of this and/ or can advise please?
Also hoping this might help someone in a similar situation..

The spline link tube fails for a past time on the similar Freelander 2.
The failure is apparently attributed to a lack of protective grease from the factory. A replacement spline link tube needs proper lubrication when fitting.

The leaks need identification before you can fix them.
Drive shaft seals are the most likely to fail, ad they get road muck thrown at them, and wearing inner drive shaft joints don't help the situation.

Morning, so I have an update I took the DS to a gearbox specialist and I can now confirm that the leak is sorted. I believe that the splined sleeve was the culprit and this has been sorted. If anyone would like advice on this please feel free to message me. I am based in South Yorkshire. I hope this could help someone with a similar issue.
I know some might criticise me rejuvenating an old thread but my experience with this issue was terrible and I hope no one else gas a similar exoerience. The vehicle has been undrivable for 2 and half months!! My own research told me that (including the helpful comments from members on here for which I am very grateful) this is a relatively common issue. The first place who claimed to have fixed the issue either didn't or failed spectacularly and then suggested the gearbox was goosed. Obviously I had to pay a bill for their 'work'. I then pursued the issue as I believed and knew this could be fixed. As mentioned I replaced the battery as a first port of call then had the gearbox fluid topped up. I guess this could've worked out differently at this point. Then it was clear the leak needed specialist attention as it persisted.
