freelander esx

I currently own a freelander 2.0 xedi 1998, 83000 miles, had it for 10 months and really enjoying it but would like a newer model. Looking at a 2.0 esx 2001 with 110000 miles, the dealer has it up for £4995 and has offered me £1500 in part ex.
Is this a good deal or could I do better, the prices on the net for freelanders varies greatly

Checking this month's Glass's, the trade price for your car is £1490 in average condition so the dealer has simply offered you book value in part exchange.

Book retail value for a 2001(51) reg 2.0 Diesel ESX is £4810 so the dealer again is simply selling at book.

I would suggest that there is probably room for a bit of negotiation on either the sale price or the part ex value but that the dealer is not offering an unfair deal. What's probably holding the deal back a bit is the part ex. An old Freelander is not going to be something the dealer wants to retail and so the price will never be good. You will get a better deal if you sell your Freelander privately - Even for the same £1500 although you should get more - and come back to the dealer with just cash.

With the part ex in the deal your should try and haggle a couple of hundred quid off the asking price or ask for a free upgrade to a better or longer warranty.

sold me 2.0 xdi with 86000 miles just a few months back privately and got £3200 for it. Maybe get a couple of grand or more doin' it that way. Just a thought.....

forgot to say it was a 1999 S reg

Its a 2002 year not 2001 like I wrote, also he is giving 6 months tax, 12 months mot and 6 months warranty, my tax and mot is due next month and I need 4 tyres, selling it private isnt really an option for me, so it seems like its a fair deal then

You want to be careful of the ones that are knocking about. Could just be bushes or could be something altogether more expensive...
