Hello Chaps, never used this site before
Background……Had Freelanders for years. Live North Yorks, cook, ride, shoot, walk, work with construction industry,
BUT KNOW nothing about cars!!
The car …..purchased as exdemo in March 2015 From Main dealer. Last batch of Freelanders, a metropolis 2lt, has 66,000 miles, automatic diesel, originally all servicing via main dealers and now by independent Landrover garage for many years. All sound and all services and MOT’s on time etc. Cam belt replaced as preventative measures last year, always past MOT etc. Very fond of my Freelander, been reliable, comfy and so useful.

The problem…..Friday driving as normal, then message “restricted performance“ appears. Loose power, max speed 30MPH, limped to my usual garage. Diagnostics applied. Advised Turbo gone!! My independent garage users Landrover parts, has just quoted me £3,519 (including, parts, labour, and vat) to repair. I know it’s a big job, but ME thinks this quote might be on the high side!! IS IT??
Thank you in advance of any advice. Xx

Yes, that's a silly price, especially considering that the turbo on these us good for over 200 000 miles with timely oil changes.
There are many things more likely to fail than the turbo, like any of the 4 boost hoses, although the small one by the throttle body is by far the most likely, and easily checked.

The turbo isn't a big job on these, it's like 3 hours.

I'd get another opinion from someone who isn't interested in ripping you off.

Did the garage give you a code?

Seems a massive price, mine has restricted and was a maf sensor and hoses. (146k original turbo still)

check pipework . we had this and spent .2.5k on turbo from a third party mechanic as dealer quote was 4k. to leave and then have same fault appear again. Upon closer inspection the turbo was fine but a pipe into it was split and causing loss of pressure when under load. The main dealer diagnosed it.....

Hi everyone , hope this reaches all who connected. Reflected on your advice. Removed my Freelander from original independent garage this morning. Then visited another, recommended and they have been brilliant, diagnosis run, then options, to consider first, not necessarily a new turbo, so billing much less and even if it were a new turbo, their billing would be over £1,500 less that the original 3.5+k quoted to me. Second garage horrified at the original 3.5+k quoted. Happy days.. thank you Freelander Forum. You saved my bacon. Must get the hang of using your site. Xx

Great news, keep us posted, hopefully they will get to the bottom of it....I remember the sick feeling in our stomachs when we drove away with a new turbo and less than 1/2 a mile limp mode again kicked in. Luckily the pipe was £150 so not too bad but heart breaking to think of the wasted money.

Hi everyone who helped last weekend. My Freelander2 is healthier! The NEW independent garage I was recommended was GreenOval at Thorpe Arch, Nr Wetherby. Martin explained diagnostics / options fully & I understood! Next day they replaced the Actuator and part road tested. As I live in rural area with no public transport they released Freelander to me, on Tues, on the basis I continued road testing and update them if messages appeared. We are now Saturday, 175 miles on and NO messages. Martin and his team genuinely helpful, no hype, or ego just efficient working. My bill was £601.74. so🤞👍. Very different from another independent who insisted Turbo gone their quote 3.5k to replace. Thanks to all who came to my assistance. Xx

Wicked... this is such amazing news..... never happier hearing how someone saved money. I don't doubt the other garages, skills and abilities vary and a lot of the time go for the big ticket item is easier than step by step diagnosis. I think knowing that a turbo shouldn't just fail helps with the logic..

You’re right Eric my original gut feeling was WHAT! Advice helps one reflect especially when such matters not my forte! Even today many garages still think that “the little woman” won’t understand, so she’ll pay up! How wrong they are. We just need logical explanation. Bit of kindness goes a long way. Thank you. Xx
Great guys at green oval 👍 glad to hear it got sorted.

Hello, thanks for comment/ support…..yes delighted to have found Green Oval.
Unfortunately I’ve needed them again, after a young chap dashing to work made swift work of my off side wing mirror! He got out the car gave me false info and ran off! But what was memorable, he was holding his very green homemade “cigarette “ with a pungent smell! …..so who knows whats travelling along our North Yorkshire country roads nowadays. You can guess what Martin at Green Oval said.
