Hello everyone,

Looking for some advice re. my 2005 Freelander TD4 cutting out.

When I bought it last year there was some trouble turning over and once it did, there was a lot of black smoke. I changed the glow plugs and fuel filter and this seemed to have done the trick. It was firing up straight away, no more black smoke and seemed to be running smoother too.

In the last few weeks however, I’ve noticed that it’s struggling to turn over again and occasionally it’s been cutting out either when idle or at very low revs. A few days ago I tried to start it and after it had eventually fired up it cut out. A couple of times when I’ve been reversing it’s also cut out. It cuts out almost every time when I have to make a turn straight away on starting up (e.g. when manoeuvring out of a parallel park it will cut out as soon as I turn the steering wheel).
Once I’ve got going I’ve not had any issues with it cutting out *touch wood* but I’ve seen other threads where people have said this has happened to them whilst driving. Now I’m pretty concerned this might happen and I’m reluctant to drive it anywhere just incase.

I’m wondering if the fuel filter might be gunked up again but to be honest I don’t know much about Freelanders so I’m unsure where to start. Any advice would be hugely appreciated, there are some seriously knowledgeable people here!

(Not sure if it’s relevant but it’s got 91,000 miles on the clock and is auto transmission).

Thank you very much

Hi Torr Td4.
Your first step is to get some diagnostic on the FL1 TD4 diesel, see what that says if any codes etc, it is most likely the regulator O-rings that need doing fix is about an hours work, parts cost about £5.22p from the link below.

Don't worry they will fit, even though it says Fiat.

You could also do a leak back test on the injectors, i am currently changing some injector on a R40 diesel which stills runs but is lumpy.

Starter motor off then remove the regulator to replace the O-rings above.

… or could be the LP pump showing signs of ‘on it’s way’ out?

Like Arctic says, you need to get some data.

FWIW, I managed to switch the HPFP regulator O rings without removing the starter - purely as it was proving a right pig to get out, so I tried (and succeeded) leaving it in. It is, however, very difficult to get to the bolts holding the regulator in.

I still have the new copper contacts set to fit in the starter, when I eventually try to get it off again!
