Sorry Mr Stuart please forgive my naivety I've only had my Freelander three weeks and until now have never been under the bonnet of any vehicle other than to top up the windscreen fluid. This is all a major learning curve for me.
The crank case filter has not been replaced as yet, I have just received the service parts today that I ordered last week, Mann oil filter, Mann Fuel filter, Air filter and would like to order if its a sensible thing to do the upgraded oil separator/crank case filter and have not yet purchased engine oil as I'm not sure which I should use.
As for the MAP sensor, I have no idea what that is or where its located. I also do not know what the Turbo actuator is.
I got the car three weeks ago, and went from London to Devon for the bank holiday weekend with it, it was only on the hills and when I kicked down that I noticed the lack of power and black smoke. had never driven one before that so didn't know how it should perform.. so I guess it had been like that since I got it..

I think you are doing ok for someone who has only lifted the bonnet of a car to fill the screen wash before.
The Freelander isn't as complex as an ultra modern diesel, but not far off.
It's pretty easy to DIY most things, with the benefit of saving a few quid too.

Power steering fluid.
Ok I guess this is going to sound ridicules but I've noticed that my power steering fluid is almost at the lower level in the reservoir. can I use any power steering fluid or does it have to be specific?

regarding the Haynes manual @VELZ , u can have mine if u wish as i won't need it anymore, please remind me when we fix the hippo

when u check ur power steering , start the engine , turn the wheels left and right lock then centre the wheels again , turn the engine off , let it settle for a few minutes , then check level and top up to the level

Good morning Gary, Shall I go ahead and order the parts from the list you provided?

I was reading the item description for the EGR blanking kit. it sais that by fitting one of these there would be less smoke, better fuel consumption and better engine performance.
How does such a simple looking piece of kit do so much?

in simple terms it stops all the junk being recirculated back into the engine , egr stands for exhaust gas recirculation

it was designed to reduce the Nox emissions

when i done mine it did indeed make a difference
