that's one good thing at least. No I don't have another vehicle to use, that's the only one we have?

think it would be better to try at least keeping it local if u can , just until it's been checked and peace of mind

I have boxed new, Air filter, Oil filter, Fuel filter and 4 meters of 4mm ID silconised hose waiting for the Crank case filter,

brilliant :D

so we can fit

vaccum hose as req
updated crankcase breather
fit egr blanking kit
turbo filter
air filter
remove and clean maf sensor

that should be a start , lol

ah yes I forgot the EGR blanking kit, waiting for that too. I ordered 10kg of mixed new cleaning rags, waiting for those also

Well I know I can have the engine cover, air filter cover and the big plastic thing that the turbo hoses are connected all off in about 10 minutes as I've done that to fit the long vac hose. after that it will all be a learning curve. I guess you can dictate what needs to be done and I can have crack at it, unless of course its something that needs a more experienced person such as yourself.

is suprising how quickly u pick up knowledge , can show u as we go along what parts need coming off and help if u get stuck , whilst i take other items off etc , easiest way to learn, lol

Hi Gary & everyone.
All parts arrived yaay, fitted the turbo filter with the arrow pointing towards the hose, hope that's right.
Noticed that the black smoke kicks out at around 2000rpm if that means anything?

happy days

yes that's correct with the arrow going towards the pipe , can't believe it was connected to the ird breather pipe , never mind it it was it is and can only now move forward

around 2k is when the turbo starts to come in , can u feel the turbo coming in at all

will have to test the turbo actuator to see if it's working , along with going through everything bit by bit as a way of eliminating items

also found the haynes manual u can have , just realised though it only goes up to 2003

I have no idea why it was connected in that way and wouldn't have known either way until I registered here.
I think I can hear the turbo, then I'm a complete mechanical novice so cant be certain. shame about the Haynes manual but no big deal, thank you very much for thinking of me with the offer, very kind.

Should I connect the hose with the filter to something with a cable connector or just leave it dangling loose at the back or the air filter box?

A 2003 Haynes manual will cover most of the later car. ;)

Leave the filter hanging loose.

20170914_101143.jpg Hey all.
Re the black smoke and lack of power problem with my Freelander TD4.
Well today I opened up the crank case filter box with a view to upgrade the filter to the updated oil separator which I had recently purchased, only to find that it had already been upgraded at some point, so didn't see a point in replacing it again.
I also installed an EGR blanking kit, and new air filter while I was at it.
Ive changed the long vacuum hose that goes from the vac tank to the solenoid and checked that the other two hoses that come from the solenoid for splits but they are fine.
Since fitting the EGR blanking kit, there seems to be a bit more power, though I have not been for a long test drive or motorway to be sure.
Still got black smoke at around 2000rpm.
Not sure what to try next, any help would be very appreciated.

Quick question. how many vacuum hoses and turbo hoses that can leak are there on a 2004 Freelander TD4?

HI Nodge. are there only the 3 vac hoses that come from the turbo solenoid and 3 turbo hoses? are there any others please as I can hear like an air/ whistle.

There are 4 boost hoses. 3 at the front and 1 at the back of the engine, fitted to the turbo.
There a 3 vac pipes on the control solenoid. 1 if the long feed from the reservoir and 2 short pipes. 1 to the turbo vac actuator and the other is to the open air, via a filter.
The EGR vac circuit often suffers from splits too. These can affect the boost slightly, because of vac of vacuum available to operate the turbo.

Whistling sounds are normally boost pipes split somewhere. Or the intercooler itself.
