Freelander 3 door rear window goes down randomly + alarm q's

Hi all,

I've recently bought a Freelander 2004 TD4 3 door for my girlfriend and it's riddled with small issues that are driving us crazy.

I've read a bunch of threads on the issue of the rear window going down, I tried calibrating the window with both methods (ignition position for the key, and the 1500 rpm one), and still, after a 5-20 min break, the window goes down.
This happens regardless of the lock state of the car.
I am thinking there might be an issue with a roof sensor or something to trigger this.

Also, another thing is that when I keep the open button on the remote pressed, only the back window goes down. The door windows work normally from the interior switches. Is this normal behavior?

The last curiosity is about the alarm. Sometimes, upon closing the car, the horn goes off. Other times it doesn't. What can be done to switch between these behaviors?

Pressing the button on the remote, only opens the window on the back door - no other doors.

I'm not sure exactly on the operation of the back window in relation to sensors (I have a 5 door) - however, I expect you are correct in thinking the car believes the roof is off, so drops the window.

The horn sounding when you lock the car with the remote (and possibly with the key) is because the car is not secure. Usually this means a door is not closed properly - however, I would think it would make the same sound if you tried to lock it with the roof off.

So, given all that, I'd say that yes you have a problem with the sensor(s) that detect whether the roof is on or off.

Ignore the 1500 Rpm calibration, that's rubbish. Battery on, ignition on, move rear window switch to the up position, until 3 beeps sound. That's the calibration complete.

If the CCU sees a roof open signal, then it'll drive the rear window down, regardless of how many times it's calibrated.

That's normal.

The horn sounding is warning that something is open, be it the rear window, the roof, bonnet, tail door or a door.

Also. If you've not had it long, then you really should check the vehicle is fitted with 4 identical tyres, with the least worn on the rear. Also do the One Wheel Up Test (search on here). This stuff is critical, if catastrophic drive train failure is to be avoided!

Hey everyone, thanks a bunch for your replies.
For the alarm, it was indeed something open, I had forgotten about the boot being left on the open position.
I disassembled the hardtop and hardwired the sensor with a short wire, and the problem disappeared.

Yeah, the vehicle is a recent buy, with new tires. I had a friend help test the car before purchase and he tried to move the VCU with 2 screwdrivers and it just slightly moved (I think that's how it went)...so he said it's in good nick. To quote, he said "it's alive"
