after removing me county stickers a while ago and all the paint coming off the doors i still havent got rnd to getting them painted.ive searched on here and read various freds.ive been quoted £150 to do both doors.the doors are in perfect nick and lovelly shiny aluminium so im guessing someone didnt key them up properly b4 painting.trouble is the landy is white of all colours and does tend to stand out a bit..i have considerd hand painting the whole landy in nato green,but im a fussy git and dont think ill be happy with the finish.who on heres hand painted theres and hows the finish been.gotta do summit soon as i have to leave the body coverd in mud so you cant see all the paint coming orf..any pics or advice before i commit would be spantastic ta

Why not just sand it and spray it with cans? If you don't like the finish that you get you can look at getting it sprayed properly at a later date.
 
if yu sand it - yu will take off any protective coating on the ally.
Remove all old paint using nitromors or summat that works, then use sugar soap and an etch primer - that will bond to the ally and give a good surface for your painting.

Does that mean that if you just want to touch up a small area you have to strip the whole door back?
 
nope - corse not - but yu need to take off any loose paint. Sugar soap is the usual stuff to clean up surfaces prior to repainting, and etch primer bonds to the existing coating.

I spose it depends how good a job yu want to do - if it werent a landy, then stripping the whole door wud be the best way - getting new paint to match is a bugger unless you can "feather" it in to the old paint.
 
I hand painted the rare crossmember on mine with black hammerite and Im not to happy with it but Im a fussy fcuker too. I have found the same paint in aerosal cans in halfords proberly do it again shortly with that
 
the remaining paint on the doors just peels off by hand,the rest of the body is in top nick theres 3 small blisters in the paint behind passenger door panel..no dents atall,its just feckin white,and as ive left all the mud on it for ages its discoloured the white badly now im sure it will t cut up again and i could just do doors,but itll still be white,missus came up with the bright idea of saying why not paint the black bits on it like the army ones but keep the white..great i said itll look like a feckin cow!!!
 
if yer using hammerite, over the top of eg red oxide primer of acid etch etc, put a spot of celulose thinners in the tin , just a spot , makes all the difference when brushing,

There had be to a trick to it, I tried it straight from the tin after Id sanded everything back. It says on the tin that you can paint it straight on to rust so I never bothered with primer. Its fine apart from the finish the stuff is so thick its hard to stop runs I think I had 4 attempts at it before I settled for a near enough job. When I get around to it Ill definately use the aerosal cans next time
 
Try Marine paint! I just painted my boat with 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of toplac, If you follow the instructions on Internationals web site you should end up with a near glass like finish! You use a small sponge roller and tip it off with a fine brush for no brush marks! International even do a special primer for aluminium boats, No different than painting your Landy, Easier I'd say because tha panels are flat, Pay a visit to a boat chandlers! Loads of colours too!!
