fishsponge's ongoing thread of problems!

my landy ain't a "crock of ****"... it's actually in pretty good condition, I think! Just that the minor problems are major for me cos i've never done anything like it before!

Thanks for the "well done" too... not sure whether that was for inspiring, infuriating or both! lol, I suspect mostly for the infuriating, of course :D

I am very grateful for the help though, of course, i've learned so much I think it's unbelievable considering i had never taken a spanner to a car in my life before I joined this forum.

Anyway - i'll leave things well alone over Christmas if I can, and I think i'm just going to leave the SRS light lit up for the rest of time. I don't have the cash to go from garage to garage or to leave it with someone to fix once and for all, so screw it.

There is some logicto back up my statement... somewhere...

Infuriating probably goes without saying having read the posts... I cant remember who posted the comment re "I need the toilet, should I go? What colour paper should I use? Is pink better than blue? etc etc" but i summed up things perfectly. Fishsponge - relax mate, just have a go. Of course you will never have all the tools, and you will end up with gaffer tape holding things together while you limp to halfrauds for the next "vital" bit but that's half the fun. Or just use your motorbike?!

Inspiring - someone that has so little self confidence in mchanical issues is still willing to have a go (ok after a hell of a lot of prodding, but hey!).

And well done.... because even though fishsponge has wound up so many people, his persistance has paid off and people still offer to help! Fantastic work IMO.

Merry christmas all!

p.s. if you fancy helping out someone else (i.e. me) who really has bough a crock of **** and needs help, heres the linky ;)

Well... what I noticed today was the front passenger footwell being wet... not the mat on top of it, but the carpet underneath.

Not everywhere either... only at the back of the footwell (near the seat) on the left-hand side.

I suspect door seals, because everything underneath seems to be fine and just as Waxoyl-coated as it was a year ago!

Strange though because I see no marks on the inside of the window or door...

I guess i'll just take the mat out and see if it dries out... there's no tubes or pipes in that area is there? rear windscreen washer hose split perhaps??

right... carpet up, cardboard cover underneath glove box removed, rubber matting lifted... soaking wet underneath the rubber matting, but floor is in excellent shape. A couple of bits of rust that would probably disappear with a wire brush, but it almost looks brand new!

The underside of the car looks perfectly fine - still covered in waxoyl and it looked brand new when I had it done initially anyway.

No sign of anything coming through the bulkhead either.

Where does the rear windscreen washer hose travel? Could it be the front sunroof? The headlining and entire interior is bone dry and shows no sign of moisture whatsoever anywhere.

Very strange.

Right now, the carpet is still up, and half a roll of kitchen-roll is stuffed underneath the rubber matting. I'm just gonna have to wait until it dries and see if it starts getting wet again... most annoying!

Remove the passenger kick panel and with your bright CSI torch look for water stains down the 'A' post where the dash support bracket joins there's also a few existing holes that are or should be covered with round black sticky lables. they may be peeling off also the support bracket holes and there's also an overlapping seal that may require sealing again. U will have to unbolt the support bracket to get a better look of the area,

You only need a single drip every two mins but that mounts up over a day.

ok... always swore i'd never get involved in this never ending thread but..

i had the same problem with soaked carpet in pasanger side footwell.. when i lifted carpet the previous owner had cut away the spongy stuff under the carpet. i'm guessin cos he couldnt find the leak either..

but i found it... yay..

there is a grommit behind the dash where the wiring comes through the bulk head.. its a thick set of wires, ya cant miss em.. on the other side of the bulkhead the grommet is right under and behind the screen wash bottle. this area on mine was full of leaves and crap which was holding moisture and allowing it to creep along the wiring into the footwell.. you'd be amazed how much.. also it had caused a little bit of rust bubbling around the grommet so it wasn't sealing to the bulkhead properly.. 1st clean under and behind the washer bottle..

then i cleaned off as much rust as i could from the inside, access is really difficult, painted it with a rust treatment, painted it, the covered the whole area with silicon sealant.. now dry..

no tools needed, no specialist knowledge, you'll still be able to drive yr motor while the carpet is removed,,

you can get rust treatment from just about anywhere, even wilkinsons or pound land..

any silicon sealer will do, either bathroom or external, colour doesn't matter either..

so to summarise..

you will need

1 some rust treatment...
2 some silicon sealer....
3 paint..
4 paint brush..
5 a wet finger to spread the silicon sealer..
6 a cloth to wipe yr finger after youve spread the silicon sealer..
7 a bin to put the cloth in after you have wiped the silicon sealer off ya finger..
8 a bin man to empty the bin.... etc...etc... ad infinitum.....

thanks for all the advice, people! I see no trace of any water on the bulkhead whatsoever inside the cabin or in the engine bay. The gromet behind the glovebox seems to be in good order and I don't know how rain or road spray would get up there anyway to be honest. I don't ever go wading either.

To be honest, i'm still trying to dry it all out... the carpet is all folded back with an aerosol can holding the rubber matting up off the floor, and every time I'm driving I put the blower on 4, max heat setting and directed completely at the floor... once it's dried out i'll be able to lay down some newspaper or kitchen roll and start figuring out where it's coming from!

Windscreen seal is possible, of course.

also i'm not sure how to clean out underneath the windscreen washer container because i cannot get down there... i don't really want to have to take it out either to be honest... we'll see how things go I guess!

open bonnet stick hose pipe down under washer bottle.. have a look with a torch to see if there is crap under there..

while ya got the hose on it have a look in footwell to see any water runnin in..

ya have to remove the trim panel just below the bonnet release to see the grommet and wiring..

ok... thanks for all the advice, people! I think i've found the leak:

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-euH6xss-g"]Land Rover Discovery 300Tdi Passenger Footwell Water Leak - YouTube[/ame]

Underneath the washer bottle there are no leaves and when the vehicle is just standing in the rain no water seems to come in. When i'm driving on wet roads, however, that's when the water seems to come in.

do you guys agree that it's the grommet shown in the video or is there anything above there that it could be coming from?

I basically got it to leak by sticking the hosepipe pointing downwards in front of the washer bottle. It was on spray though, so water was basically going everywhere in that corner of the engine bay.

nick2303: thanks for the advice - do you agree it's the same grommet you had trouble with? If so, did you have to remove the grommet to clean all the rust off, or did you just basically clean around it or just lift it's edges, but leave it in place?

Regarding the list of stuff i'll need:

1 some rust treatment... - I have Waxoyl aerosol... presumably this is not ideal - I need something that can be painted or sprayed on? Will anything from Halfords do? Or Homebase/B&Q
2 some silicon sealer.... - Got it.
3 paint.. - Why? to make it look nice? or to protect it? I have some black external Hammerite - I guess that'll do.
4 paint brush.. - Got loads.
5 a wet finger to spread the silicon sealer.. - Sure I can get one of them!
6 a cloth to wipe yr finger after youve spread the silicon sealer.. - Pair of jeans.
7 a bin to put the cloth in after you have wiped the silicon sealer off ya finger.. - Yeah, yeah...
8 a bin man to empty the bin.... etc...etc... ad infinitum..... - Oh, but what if the bin man won't empty the bin? Do i phone the council? Should i dispose of the rag correctly? What class of "disposed waste" would it be? ;)
