Fishing and Rough Camping with a Landy

Hi All,

I hope that I have put this in the right section, if not let me know and I will repost it.

I am looking for some advise on a fishing adventure and hope that some of you might be able to help me and a few friends.

We are looking for a place where we might be able to go camping on a river / lake / dam / ocean shore line and occasionally go fishing.

My mate has recently bought a Disco and want to give it a try, so hopefully looking for a remote location.

I am originally from South Africa and remember some good times when I used to to throw some fire wood, beer, tent and a rod into to the back of my old man's 4wd and go sit by the local dam and relax around a fire.... Looking for something similar.

Am not scared of a place where there are no camping facilities, in fact would prefer to spend the time around an open fire.

Duration... Well looking at doing it over an extra long weekend in the not so distant future.

Sorry... We are spread around a bit, I am in London and my mate is Near Preston / Lancashire.

I'd suggest the Lake District or, if you want a nice drive, up to the Highlands..check all rules/regs re fires etc.

Too late for the Highlands - the midges are on their annual holidays there at the moment, usually stay till September.

not many places to wild camp for the sort of time scale your looking at.I usually wild camp when it last light and go by first light.fires usually a big no no too.

If you're feeling really brave and want to see some animals, try Broad St in Birmingham on a thursday evening.

not exaclty wat your looking for but try berry head(brixham) campsite at top of hill great fishing down in old quarry.Trago not far away for pay and play

Come across to the Pembrokeshire coast.

Plenty of remote beaches that you can get close to and head for the beach to have a fire. As a lot of the beaches are stone and pebble fires are not a problem.

Probably a bit far for you, but we've got lekker fishing spots around here... White waters, Tiger fish, 100lbs Nile perch, 15ft crocs, and the closest road is 100km away. Campfires just feel better.

More and more South Africans too, seems that they've seen the writing on the wall

The midgies aint gonna be that bad yet all you need is a breeze of 4mph to keep them away, they really start to become problematic later in the summer - I'm off up to Toscaig (west coast near Applecross and over the top of the Bealach Na Ba) later today once I've had my medical for my HGV renewal.

Should get a few mackerel for the smoker to feed me for a few days, there's certainly plentiful supply of shellfish with some seaweed too, though I don't usually bother with the salad as I call it.

If you've got time then come up to the highlands. The north west coast is one of my favorites head up towards Skye, Ullapool, Gairloch, Durness ect. There's rakes of great places. Achnahaird is one of my favourites, it used to well known for being as close to rough camping as you could get without the downfalls, it closed about 2 years ago but the owners have left the gates unlocked and are happy for anyone to go in. Also I'd imagine if you did come up you'd use the A9, if you turn off at Aviemore and take the B970 towards Grantown and head straight out towards Nairn but turn off towards Lochindorb (a great place to spend the night AND plenty of fishing to be had, and if you carry on and turn off at Dulsie, takes you on a great back road into Inverness. I can if you want (once my laptop's working again) create a .kmz file that you can overlay into google earth and will show you the route You'll find that most places are ok with fires and bbq's unless there's a sign that says no (the tend to make them quite obvious up here even in the middle of no where) or if in the summer the heather's quite dry. And there's plenty epic beaches with no one in sight up the north west coast.

you can have a fire when wild camping if you make sure your nearest civilisation cannot see it, ie behind a rock face, or dig it in a bit perhaps.

its all a bit taboo this because in england everywhere is privately owned, or national trust, so you cant really go and camp anywhere - but if you arrive late and leave early, leave to trace/ground markings and be careful with your fire, you will get away with it.

Just back a few minutes ago from a trip to Toscaig - rough camping (well, sleeping in the back of the defender) only fire I used was for my Kelly Kettle. Caught a good few mackerel but gave most of them away to fellow campers, but did eat my first ever sushimi (a nice fresh mackerel fillet sliced very thin, drizzled with the juice form half a lime and plenty of soy sauce - superb! If fish were warm blooded, it would still have been warm as I ate it it was so fresh, literally, straight out the sea onto my plate.)

Try black rock sands near Portmadog, Wales

You can park and drive on the beach. People wild camp on the beach or in the dunes.

The gates close at 8pm summer time however the beach patrol people have no power to remove you from the beach. They will only advise you to leave.

If you park up by the dunes you will be well away from any high tide (unless its winter or autum). You can check the tide heights on the noticeboard.

Please treat the area with respect. Remove your rubbish and traces of camp fires / bbq's. Also dont tear up the beach too much. You can park close to the dunes but a series of wooden posts means you cant drive over the dunes.

Pay attention to the signs that advise where you should not drive - they are there for a very good reason. Also avoid the cliffs at one end not worth risking a rock in the night on your tent.

No idea whats the fishing is like but hey its the sea right ?

there is a good camp site on other side of the dunes with good showers / toilets. Its only a small site so no kids entertainment. Supermarket, chippy and 5 min upthe road and maint own itself 10 min drive away with everything.

camp site is Glan-y-mor, Morfa Bychan, Portmadog

Just to add an extra twist..... Someone mentioned that it might be worth looking at a trip to Northern France. Does anyone know if this makes life easier or Not.
