First defender 90

Hi guys

just thought i would say hi i had a look around and this looked like the most promising land rover forum for my few questions. Well for my birthday i got my very first car a land rover defender 90 which i am super grateful for i have been used to land rovers being outside the house as my dad was a land rover nut. Anyway on to the questions i have had a deep read of the haynes manual and had a look around and when i inspected the landy underneath i noticed a small leak of gearbox oil i understand that land rovers are quite leaky machines how often would you reccomend i either take it in for a top up or top up my self. the leak is about 2 or 3 drops over the space of the night after a medium length drive. Secondly i noticed on another website that to the inexperienced owner a diesel engine may sound damaged when its running perfectly fine i just wanted some of you guys to back up this statement. If you guys have any tips or hints for a first time land rover owner please relay the information to me.

2 or 3 drops....it must be empty...check quickly...

Ye wanna throw that haynes book of ****e away IMHO and get a proper manwell or download one (plenty to be had if ye do a search)

If as ye say yer dad was a landy nut, then why not ask him? Most things are quite easy to do yourself and save ye quite a fortune. I've been taking piccies of things that I do to mine and sharing them with folks...

Ah well, my metaphor was wasted...sounds like you've got a reasonably normal landy motor leak there, its pretty standard. Dont worry...just check all levels now, or 2mrw, and then top them up as you go til u find a pattern, with mine its once a week cos i do about 500 miles...others leak more and so on and so on...:welcome2:

thanks guys your have been a great help i am told that it had all been topped up at the garage before saturday.

just to add in the few days i have been driving i seriously cant see myself driving anything other than a landy

That wont last....wait til it breaks...then the slow realisation hits that you have got it, and cant get rid of it...something similar happened to me when i slept with a norwegian lapdancer..thats another story...

start as you mean to go on check the levels your self that way you know its been done dont rely on other people as some times things get left out

Undo the filler plug... stick yer finger in it and see how low the oil is... fill it up until the oil is coming out of the hole and stick the plug back in

i undo the filler plug on the manual gearbox and top it up with automatic transmission fluid (quoted from haynes) then tighten up to 22 pound per foot of torque

First of all :welcome2:
As one of our frequent posters 'ere abouts says, it's not leaking it's marking its territory!

So which 90 have you got then? They do leak oil a lot compared to anything else but a tractor, but a couple of drops is nothing to worry about unless it's outside your front door, coz pretty soon it will be inside your front door then up the stairs...:doh: Most of the women aint so impressed by that. But they get used to it.
