Hi all..........

On starting the Defender Engined Disco, I get an excessive amount of
Dark smoke briefly, then stops.

Would this be down to Injectors not sealing when I stop the engine?
Causing it to burn the excess when I start it?

If it's white smoke and it stops coming from the exhaust after about 5 seconds you're fine. It's just the fuel pump advancing the fuel injection so that the engine fires up quicker, ad has more chance of starting under colder weather conditions and that. When the engine is hot, there should be no white smoke and the engine should just start.

most defenders do it,mine bellows out white smoke for about 10 secs then totally dissapears i think like pos said its summit to do with cold start up,dont worry about its normal,if it doesnt do it take it to a main delaer for a service they can they f**k your motor up so that it will smoke or worse, and has to go back again and again

I still wouldn't worry, because this is really one of two things. If you start your engine from cold without your foot down on the accelerator and the smoke is black, it shows that your engine is in pretty good condition and it is successfully burning all of the extra fuel that has been injected into the cylinders, hence the extra injection is working well, no fuel is being lost un burned down the exhaust and the engine will have powered straight up. Does it start straight up or does it struggle a bit?

If you start your engine with your foot on the peddle, you'll notice a similar thing because you are in effect knocking out the cold start and filling the engine with fuel your self. You could have a go at reducing the amount of fuel that the pump is injecting into your engine, although I'm not sure where the adjuster bolt is on the Bosch fuel pumps.

I would't worry! It's just when it starts throwing out black or white smoke when the engine's warm that you need to think things over a little.

I think he means he has a disco engine in his defender doesn't he? Saying that, according to his profile he has a V8 disco?!

It starts straight away!

It throws out the Black s**t when it's hot or cold!!

Please don't tell me it's F****d!!!

Black smoke is normally caused by excess fuel. This would suggest that at starting your engine is being overfueled for a second or two - injection pump, maybe a bit of oil but i would expect that to be blue smoke.

I wouldn't worry about it at all, if it runs fine and clears straight away there is nuttin to worry about at all!
