Guy like George said you can run two batteries together in parallel but they have to be of the same type with the same internal resistance otherwise you will have problems.

Other than that your winch and other high load auxillary devices such as high power inverters should be run of the secondary battery,
The example you made of "you will only be winching with the engine running" is probably right but i have seen in many cases people stalling there engine while winching and not being to restart it..... and jumping it off the secondary battery while in a foot of mud is a lot of ****ing around.

If your finding the winching battery is going flat quickly there are only really three reasons, firstly is your secondary battery ok?

second make sure you haven't got one of these split charge systems which uses a 30A relay!! While winching your winch is probably drawing several hundred amps under heavy load you need the relay to be able to supply all the power the alternator can give to your secondary battery which in your disco is probably 90 amps? to replenish the battery and provide additional power to the winch.
Also make sure the wiring off the split charge system is easily capable of this current taking into account the resistance of the cable due to its extra length!

Thirdly Check your wiring to your winch and two and from the solenoid pack if its been relocated is up to the job! to higher resistance and you end up with loosing power to the winch and putting energy into the wiring as heat...just wasted energy!

hope this helps mate

If I remember Guy only had a little old bit of wire for his split charge system which I think was just a relay based one.

I know when I get round to running cables for the winch on mine, I will just buy and use 2 brand new batteries. I've never suffered a flat battery in the middle of nowhere yet :D

In other news... Another workshop being converted. Should give about 20ft x 20ft. They used to be old grain store bins. All internal dividers will be removed and outer walls reconfigured and resealed to form a nice strong tin box with roller door. It gives me something to do :D

I was going to say that I thought the wire from his split charger system looked quite small.

Perhaps you need to get up to see Mikey for a proper opinion Guy.

And Essex off road had some excitement today too:

We had broken wings and Diffs, blocked fuel filters, a roll over and near death experience, non-use of headlights due to filling with water, and handfuls of fun :)

Oooh that looks fun.
I'll bring the kayak as well

Oh **** mate, sorry to hear that bad news. Hope things get better for you, Take care.

I'm doing Rochford in feb if your up for it James, don't know if anybody else is doing it.

I will be there, 90 will not though  be carefull there are some deep puddles there, just follow someone if they disappear drive around the puddle ;).

the Essexoffroad trip looked like a good one, not been there for a longtime now, what happened to the 90 with the roof rack, did it roll or the recovery make it roll as it looks like it was being pulled the wrong way by the white one ?
there is a video online of that Hullbridge crossing, they had to make a plough to push through the mud its soo deep, the tide comes in very quick aswell, I know someone who lost his car in ther when the tide came in as he was stuck trying to cross, they had to attach a bouy to it so the boats missed it, then recover it at the next lowtide.

Thats sounds like fun! Lets do it lol

Mike already saw that, he didn't notice the plough on the front until I pointed it out.

Should have some rain soon and be able to get another laning trip arranged.
