Going to get my first landrover 90 very soon, At a push I could get a 2007/08 model with the new 2.4 engine, how does this engine compare to the older TD5. Ive read a lot of reviews etc, but Im looking for some comments from you guys....the experts.

Whats it like to maintain, reliability etc.

I've driven 300, tdi, td5 and puma. To be honest it depends on what you will use it for. Td5 has much less torque than puma so you'll be up and down the box more. The Puma has loads of torque which you really notice in the real world and if you can stretch the cash would be my choice of the two.
Would also recommed you drive them both to get a real world feel. My current drive is 300tdi but I like "old school"

I'd like to see the torque and powere figures written down as my TD5 is one of the torquiest diesels I've ever driven. I regularly tow a double horse box or a trailer loaded with fire wood and have no trouble.

The Puma is a 4 cyl transit engine if I'm not mistaken and there are loads of horror stories out there on the net - as there are for the TD5. I've heard that the Puma is underpowered for the Landrover and even more complicated than the TD5 for servicing and electronics.

As Jerry says, drive them both before you buy.

i have a 56 plate 90 td5 and have had the new puma a few times (loaner while mines been in for warranty repairs ) and i was so glad to get my td5 back .
1. if you are anything other than verticly challenged the cabs too small (knees rammed up under the dash).
2. the 6 speed box is made from swiss cheese (have heard it is the same as the mondeo):eek:.
3. i found it to be very much more thursty on the juice too
4. i found it much less torgue'y seemed to spend all day changing up and down the box .
5. the only thing i can see is its perhaps a tad more nippy on excelleration , but close yer eyes and sounds like yer driving a transit :mad:
 
Well i also have Td5 & have had the new 2.4 puma heres what i reckon!

1) love the grunt of the Td5 even tho i have tweaked it allot & i also love the sound
2) love the 6 speed box of the puma but its like revving a 50cc scooter (silent)
3) love the new dash & interior! im 5.9 ft so fit in the cab just.
 
Would agree that Puma is untested as stated, my mates is under 12 months old. I only comment based on my experience of the drive. Long term usage can't yet be evaluated.
I think the best thing is to drive 'em both...... Then buy a 300tdi.
Jerry 110 300 Tdi 152,000 miles daily drive.

Fk me, bet you use some diesel with such a long daily drive...
 
thanks for the responses guys, though Im still none the wiser.....av not got much of a a mechanical head on ma shoulders.
Keep the responses coming as Im going to put a lot of thought into it before I spend tha cash.
