Was up at Parkwood today in and out of water etc, took car home and parked it up. Went back to it 2 hours later and it won't start.

Dash lights, interior light, headlights and battery all work fine but when I turn the key to start the engine nothing happens, no ticking over, no noise at all actually.

The engine is covered in mud and dirty water/leaves so first thing I'm doing in the morning is taking the jet wash to it (gonna lubricate the electrics) but could the starter motor just need drying out?

The battery looks fine and I'm gonna try jump starting as well tomorrow but my friend seems to think the starter motor could of gotten wet or clogged with mud and just needs cleaning or a good dry.

Any suggestions?

If there is NOTHING at all then it is likely the solenoid. Either a bad connection to it or it is shorting out due to water ingress. Try blowing it off with an air blast from a compressor which should dry it off and clear the crud too.

Is the solenoid connected to the starter and am I right in thinking it's located underneath the turbo on passenger side?

It's attached to the starter like a piggy back thing. Get your head near to it but make sure you are not near something that moves then get someone to turn the key. You should hear the solenoid click. If it doesn't click then take the motor off and give it all a clean.

Give the spade connector on seleniod a wiggle or take off and on a few times then try it, could be a bad connection

Cleaned my starter motor still won't start.

There is a clicking sound coming from underneath or near the glove box when I try switch the engine on. Any ideas?

Ok so I've cleaned everything apart from the starter.

I can't get to the starter to try clean it or have a look at the solenoid as there are some pipes in the way.

Does anyone know how to gain access to the starter motor in a disco 1?

is it auto? if so is it in park properly? i some times have to move the gear shift until i hear it click, before it will turn over and start.

relay is clicking noise ,with ignition on can you make fuel solenoid click by removing wire and retouching it back doesnt it have the 1 wire ?i usually remove manifolds to get at starter for replacement

Thanks for your replies.

It's a manual, I'm going to try remove the piping and try get to it. It might just be full of mud. Failing that I'm just gonna give up and ring the AA and have them tow me to a garage :-(

Call me peculiar if you will but

When there's anything wrong wiv my Landy, washin it, int high on my list of priorities :p :D :D :D

T'is on mine:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

My landy has recently developed two faults. The first fault is that the fan belt idler pulley bearing has decided to start disintegrating. The second is and oil leak. In order to find where exactly the leak is I gotta wash my engine.:D

It's a shame the oil leak isn't on the opposite side of the engine cos it could help make sure my glow plugs come out more easily when I get around to doing em in a week or so's time. Instead I've just bought a fresh can of plusgas in to start attacking em with. I'm a bit miffed cos the previous can is still 3/4 full, it's just run outta gas where its been sat around for so long.
