EBAY no chassie number, no reg

Hmm. There's a different guy advertising engines down that way. I got his number. Seemed very cheap for supply n fit 200tdi in to td at £900 all inc. Seemed almost too cheap. Wonder where engines from?

Ask yourself why anyone would want a chassis with an ID.

In the unlikely event that your 02 disco had a rotten chassis, you might want another chassis, but you don't need the ID, maybe you have a crashed disco with a bent chassis, as above you wouldn't need the ID.

If you wanted to build a 'bitza' with that chassis as a base, fair enough, but to comply with the letter of the law you shouldn't use that ID because very little of the vehicle you built would be the original vehicle, so it should be on a Q plate.

On the other hand, if you had an 02 disco with a decent chassis but no ID......


Fair enough to sell the chassis as a part to repair another vehicle, but no reputable breaker would sell a vehicle identity of a vehicle they'd broken, because it could be used to clone a stolen vehicle.

Having a think about and yeah im dumb theres not really any reason unless you happen to have a good body sitting off a chassis not likly is it lol

Indeed, you're obviously buying the ID, not the chassis, because surely if you wanted the chassis it would be because you had a vehicle requiring a chassis, and surely that vehicle would have an ID already?

Not sure whether it's within the letter of the law to do what he's doing, ebay clearly think it is as they won't remove listings like that. the same seller had 90 chassis with IDs for sale a while back for £800, those were rotten chassis, when you can buy a brand new galv chassis for £1250 inc vat, go figure
 
On the V5 there is a section to send in when a vehicle is broken so I would of thought VOSA and DVLA would be interested also there is the confirmation of destruction.
As I understand the law
cat A must be crushed
cat B must broken down and non structural parts can be sold on
Insurance Write Off

You can't self declare a vehicle as broken or sctrapped anymore - this is probably one of the reasons so many ID's are sold - quite simply because if you break a vehicle as a individual, or small business who is not registered to dispose of vehicles you get stuck with the ID. You can't return it to the DVLA, your basically stuck.

If you ring up the DVLA they tell you to sorn it. Seriously. Sorn it for the rest of your life. In their eyes that is the only option.

Quite simply i think they are encouraging people to sell ID's

All seems ok to me... on your basis of thinking he's dodgy i guess you'd think i was dodgy too as i sold 2 series military fuel tanks, fuel switch over, some 2.2.5 petrol engine bits, some series dials, etc.

It's just general landy tat... (unless there was something you were specifically referring to which has since ended?)

I wasn't referring to any specific thing, he had a lot of late land rover spares, engines gearboxes axles etc on when i posted the link which has now ended, and it's a private account which didn't have much feedback for that sort of stuff, i wondered where a items like a gear box, a full XS interior and a pair of axles had come from all of sudden. However, looking at what he's got on now and what he's sold in the past couple of months,

it looks like he's a breaker, so that would explain why he has the land rover spares, fair enough.

I wouldn't want to make any specific allegations based on an ebay listing anyway, the point i was making was, when you see a lot of parts from an expensive vehicle for sale on a private ebay account, it does make you wonder where they came from. A couple of months ago i was looking for some bits on ebay and i came across this guy who was selling bits of a tidy TD5, the pictures were obviously taken at a private house and he had sold virtually everything from a late vehicle down to the chassis. all in very good condition, mint doors, mint bulkhead etc, and i did wonder why anyone would break a vehicle that was tidy and complete? though one obvious answer does spring to mind.

the guy i linked to is using a private account when he's clearly a business seller, that's understandable given ebay's greedy fees for business sellers, but what happens if you buy something from a seller like this, do you get a proper receipt? or do you just turn up and pay notes which go in the seller's back pocket?

Just to be clear as we're talking in a public forum, i'm sure everything is above board with this guy, but, we complain about land rovers being stolen, are we perhaps contributing to the demand for stolen motors by buying bits from people who aren't clearly doing everything by the book?
