Early v Late Alloys

Thinking of picking up a second set of wheels for my 1999 1.8 5dr.

I intend sticking with the 16" alloys, but wondered whether the later 'TD4' wheels are simply differently shaped to clear the brakes or are they more offset?

If more offset then they should give a wider track and hence hopefully a bit more space for wider tyres. If just more 'hollowed out' then I'll have a rethink and possibly go to 15" steels. :scratching_chin:

Td4 wheels will fit a 1.8 as they are wider off set.
If you do it the other way round you need 5mm spacers.

So it's definitely a difference in offset?
Hoping to get away with 235/70s without spacers, so extra offset is what I'm after.
I have, however, seen reference to the wheels being 'scalloped out' to give the clearance too. There's either more physical space or the wheels are pushed further out - the latter being what I'm hoping for!
Can't find any online references to the actual ET figure for each kind of wheel, so here's hoping...

A few on here have put wheels between both versions. Someone will be along with the off sets later, probably.

Cheers Mike. If, as I hope, you're right then it should be a good swap. A definite on the offsets is what's needed.

Oh. I have just picked up some other 16" alloys for my Td4 but I didn't realize there was an ET difference. My FL has the 5 spoke alloys and the ones I've got are the triple spoke alloys.

I think you're OK - AFAIK the 'nobbles' between the spokes on your new wheels suggest they're the newer type.
Your old ones are just what I'm looking for if I can confirm the offset is different!

My old ones will be up for sale as soon as I've swapped the tyres onto them. Mine is a 2003 TD4 if that helps with the offset? lol

I can remove a wheel and check what the offset is?

both of my set of wheels are ET48. So will fit mine no problem.

For future reference (the info I couldn't find!), the presumed early 16" alloys on my Freelander are marked ET46, so only 2mm difference in offset between the older and newer wheels.
I fitted a 235/70x16 Michelin 4x4 Synchrone to my spare yesterday and seemed to get away with no rubbing when trying it on the front, although the tyre is very close to the strut.
Hopefully get the other three on today and see how that goes.
