hi there,2 questions, first of all do all discos have the doughnut by rear propshaft(mines a 1998 3.9 auto)and secondly i have a clunk coming from somewhere underneath car but it mostly happens when slow speed braking/crawling, it feels like somethings holding the car back?and it does,nt happen when i shift into neutral when slowing down.could it be transmission brake not adjusted properly?any help much appreciated.cheers craig

I believe all Disco1's after 1994 have the rubber doughnuts.

If you need to replace it, be careful to recover the bearing on the spigot. It would not be at all unusual for it to have gone missing, in which case you will need to order a doughnut kit, rather than just a doughnut.

just checked and it seems the doughnut on my 98 disco has gone missing:eek: where the fecks that gone?

I'm not meaning to be funny, but you are looking in the right place??

At the front of the rear diff there is a drive flange, then the rubber doughnut which joins it to the propshaft.

If it's not there, what is in it's place, a UJ?

cheers matey thats the doughnut sorted:)any idea about this transmission brake.i thought maybe its adjusted too tight and its lightly grabbing the transmission and stopping it being free, like i said the clunk is only there whilst in gear and light braking and not when neutral is selected with the car still moving:confused:

checked that earlier on mate and yes theres slight play, but would this cause a clunk when braking?has you,ve probably guessed im fairly new to these landrover clunks

Yes it would cause a clunk on braking, but also on taking up the drive. You sure it don't do that too?
There shouldn't be any play in it anyway.

I have had the transmission brake stick on, but didn't give me a knock, I just had to roll underneath and readjusted the shoes.

With knocks/clunks it appears that all you can do is check all the usual suspects.
It's early days, someone hopefully will have had a similar symptoms and will let us know.

Apart from underneath can you place a direction on the noise? My 200tdi developed a clunk towards the OSF and it turned out to be the bushes on the radius arm to axle connection. I also had to have repair washers welded in on one side as it had worn the axle mounting lugs.

regards

Dave

cheers dave,i,m hoping its something silly like that and not gearbox issues.its booked in for wednesday i,m leaving it to the pro,s because althought its something thats been there a while its doing my head in and its got to be sorted.cheers craig
