hi all having an argument with a friend. i have always wanted a landrover and ever since i sold my Nissan patrol i always said i would buy a land rover next time. I now have 4 kids and the wife said we need a another 7 seater car so here is my chance, so looking on ebay i found 1 just up the road that needs a lot of work it is a N reg disco 2 300tdi so l8 95. i paid £350 for her with no history but it was deliverd to my door steep free of charge !!!!! :) but the battle :fighting2: i am having is my friend does not think it is worth doing up here is a list of the problems lol

starts and drives but has blown head gasket
starter motor knackered
water pump knackered
no idea if the turbo is working as the wires were disconnected from the pressure valve
2 new tyers
brakes all round
alarm was disconnected and not working, and the centrel locking isn't either
rad is ...... well lets just say there not much left of it lol
there is no air filter in box
front wind screen needs replacing
will need all new cam belt and fan belt
will need full sevice!!!!!!!!!!
 there is also a shock on the steering that has rusted away don't know what this is called ????
welding ................
new boot floor
the bolt on foot steps are gone
seals are ok
rear arches both sides
and rear posts need boxing

there is also some oxidisation on the bottom of the paint on all doors and panels but nothing a bit of ally pl8 cant hide

now my argument is that im handy with a set of tools :p and a welder so it not to much work for me at all but he thinks i should buy a cleaner 1 that is working and on the road where as i say buy a dead 1 and replace all the parts your self then you know its all bin done

what do you all think did i pay to much for her my end goal is to use it for the family car and would also like to use it form some fun if i can find a group that go out locally ????? thanks in advance :D

no youve not necessarily wasted your money it would break for more ,yoo have too pay for a car either with money or time ,wires are for egr not turbo and should be blanked then you dont need to disconnect wires ,whether its worth doing is dependant on how much welding is required ,and engine new rad is essential not used one maybe worth pricing up a used replacement before working on it a 200 tdi would also fit if chassis mounts were changed and exhaust and 200tdi rad fitted

does sound alot of work !! but as you say your handy with spanners and welder , only thing i would say is spend wisely as i doubt you see a good return on your money spent , unless you keep it for a weekender ....... seems like the landrover market has been taking a slow but surely nose dive as of prescent

thanks for you input james i have already fixed the alarm central locking starter motor and have removed the head is just a gasket needed so all looking good on that side i don't mind how long it takes to do it and the welding not that bad compared to others i have Sean on ebay sorry to sound dum but what is the egr and why would i blank it ? sorry kind new to landrovers :-(

thanks robint yer is a fear bit of work but its not major work really i dun a lot more on little cars that really not worth doing for other people and ether way ill keep her for the weekends :)

exhaust gas recirculation it puts exhaust gas into inlet for emissions purposes ,but it clogs up inlet manifold and can lower boost pressure if not sealing properly plus poor running if it sticks open ,its worth removing valve and fitting a blank tin gasket to block hole then you can leave connected to look as if working foi mot purposes (though unsure if a mot necessity on 300)steering damper needs replacing

EGR valve also known exhaust gas recirculaton valve just recirculates exhaust gas back through your air inlet.
only problem with them is they clog up your engine with black crud so if it's still there blank it off clean intercooler plus your air intake.

Sorry to hi jack the thread guys, but looking at the EGR removal kits on fleabay as dirt cheap, but is it an MOT requirement as i wish to keep the vehicle road worthy?

Hacker keep with it, sounds like the length of list of work mine had when i picked it up, just got the dreaded rott to get rid of now. Its all worth it in the end, for the pride of driving round a vehicle that you have worked on and fixed up :D

if nothing else by the time you have finished repairong it, atleast you will know its a good solid base. I've spent around £1400 on mine since i bought it january this year. Ok some of that was basic off road goodies, but the rest for welding and replacement parts. Sounds alot, but i'm nearly finished replacing worn out parts, and i know its a good solid disco. stick with it, and you will have a good un

thanks sirfixer im so looking fowerd to going part shoping tommorow so i can get stuck in :) and thanks nigel-s it should be fun :)

I recently bought a 300tdi with 12 months MOT that had the EGR pipework removed and welded shut so presumably not an MOT fail - for now at least.

One of the good things about older Landrovers is the cheapness of many of the parts, compared to other makes.

Steering damper - an MOT fail if fitted an dbuggered - OK if not present?

think it will fail if there's not 1 on it any 1 know wear i can get a sump gasket from on ebay as cant find 1 for the 2.5tdi ???

300's don't need the EGR,
elmer passed MOT last week with 2 advisories
brake pipe starting to rust and wheel hub slight play

NO EGR on it (went 2 years ago)and not mentioned,
passed emission test( particles output ONLY on 300tdi) -
just tweak the pump as per "sluggish Disco Not any more" thread
no cat either - not a word about that either

So when you get round to it JFDI and enjoy the disco

BTW :welcome2: to the world of landy's
