Hi Guys, newbie here. Been lurking around for a while but need some advice so thought it was about time I joined up !

Got a 200TDI Auto 94, last time I used it no problems, went to start today no dash lights and will not crank over. Obviously thought flat battery so took off and gave a good charge but still the same problem.
The wipers, hazards, clock, radio, interior light all work but there is no oil / battery light and will not crank over. When you turn the key to crank position the clock goes off but the interior light does not.

Any advice much appreciated as it is driving me mad ! :)

Sounds like a knackered battery. what is the voltage on the battery? Sounds like you wanna get it drop tested.

Hi ratty thanks for the quick reply, would the battery cause the oil / battery light not to come on at all, the hazzards and wipers all function normally ?

no. I thought you meant they were all dimming out with the clock.

Check your main fuses in the engine bay. Not the small blade fuses but the BIG ones. It's most likely one of them thats gone.

Thanks, I did check all the small fuses but didn' know there were others ? Where are they located ?

My Disco did the same this morning. I thought it was the battery. Re charged and still nothing. This time it turned over but nothing else. Found out that the wire had come off the stop solenoid. You never know?

yea was gonna say you have a trigger wire to the starter check that.
I had the same problem did my head in for ages lol

I agree wi ratty, it sounds like a fooked battery to me, yes you will get small electric things to work like indicators and so on but when you ask the battery to turn the engine over the battery cant supply the amps needed. Bear in mind that a battery loses approx 50% of its capacity when it gets below minus 2, this is why your battery tends to give up when it gets cold after having served you fine all summer (the little we had that is).Like ratty says charge the battery and then get it drop tested.

I still can not see how it could possibly be the battery ? Example the hazards work fine but the indicators dont. There is no red warning lights on the dash ( oil / battery ) when you turn the key on, but the hazzard indicator green lamp works fine and so does the blue main beam. All wipers and washers work fine.

I have looked everywhere under the bonnet and can see no main fuses, anyone have a picture ?

Thanks everyone for help so far.

What I mean is yes the battery could be fooked but I would surely still get the two red lights and at least a click when trying to turn it over ?

If you have hazards you would have red lights even if they are dim.

You may or may not have clicking depending on how flat your batt is.

By the description you are giving I still think it is a main fuse blown.

Keep looking for that elusive fuse box.

get a voltmeter on the starter solenoid, you might find it's just a broken wire or even a jammed starter

he's got no dash lights Sean. He's got hazards and interior lights but no batt, oil, brake warning lights. Thats what makes me think it is one of the big blade fuses gone. Don't spose you know where the fusebox is on the engine bay cos I have gone blank?

Has anyone got any idea where these main fuses are, I have had my head under the bonnet for so long I now look like the hunchback of notradame

I have traced all visable wiring and it either goes to connectors in the loom or through the bulkhead into the cab, could they be hidden behind the dash somewhere ??

Just a reminder it is a 200TDI auto 93/94.

Cheers :D

I've had a look at Rave and it says "A second fuse box is located on the right side of the engine compartment adjacent to the coolant reservoir."

Not sure if this is the one you are looking for but hope it helps.
