Discovery wont start.

mine is a '98 V8 and here is the main engine fuses as far as I know...

If you have a look at the attached picture of the lefthand side of the engine bay, you will see some cables which are wrapped in a sort of gauze material.

I've been led to believe (never looked myself) that there are one or more main fuses within that wrap.

Now, is that clear and helpful enough for you !!!

Thanks very much ! I had been looking for some form of fuse box, pretty sure thats how mine looks so will unwrap the gauze and have a look tommorrow.

No problems at all, it's not raining here toooooo heavily :D

And after you've found that the fuses are ok, can we start talking again about a new ignition switch, available form Paddock Spares £25+vat?????;) :rolleyes:
 
wot happens if yu put 150 amps throw a thin piece of wire?

it acts like a fuse - and melts......
the fuseablle links are sections of calibrated wire soldered into the wiring loom. Not plug and play;) like a replaceable fuse.

Ok, point taken :D , TBH I rekon it is the switch, I just thought it would be easier to start with the easier! Does that make sense ?? :eek:

Never new that, can they be replaced ? Well obviously they can :eek: but where do you buy them from ?

Looks like it will be easier to try a new ignition switch !! :D
 
Ok, I have made some progress, heres what I have tried.Starter motor / solenoid, if I short across the back the starter spins, if I put a 12v supply to the solenoid input the engine turns over fine ( does not start though ) So thats okThe ignition switch has a main 12v supply coming in which is then distributed to position 1 then 2 and 3 for cranking, all working normallyFound fusable links ( at last LOL ) all ok ( checked continuity )I have worked out that the wipers etc all work from position one so its position 2 that has the problem, the power is coming out from the switch so I reckon it might go to some form of relay ?? Any further ideas appreciated !
 
yup - i think relay is in nearside footwell. You have to remove the side trim and there is a bank of them. Point of interest - there is also a bank of realys in the same position on the drivers side.

Please can you supply piccies, as I have removed the buggers and cant remember which position they go back to :(.

Thanks for the pointer, I located the relays on both sides and checked each one individualy. The all appeared ok visually and when activated most did something, i.e. one turned on the washer motor, one the heater fan, one turned over the engine and others were wipers etc.

I am now confused because everything appears to function as it should the problem appears to be after the ignition switch, as the switch is definately ok !

I think I need a wiring diagram to trace exactly where the wires go after the switch and work my way along, are the haynes manuals any good for diagrams ?? I really should buy one.

I will try and get some photos of the relays later on and post them up for you. ;)
 
Well, still tearing my hair out here ! :( Against advice got a haynes manual to check wiring diagrams, have worked out that everything that comes on at position 2 on the ignition switch is not working, I just dont get it cos there is only one 12v supply into the switch which then gets distributed to each position, when tested 12v comes out of the switch in each position and even adding a direct 12v supply from the battery to the position 2 outlet still nothing.

The only thing I can think of now is a bad earth somewhere, anyone know where a earthstrap is or something else maybe ?

just use yer jump leads to temp connect from 0v on the battery to the chassis close to the starter and somewhere on the bulkhead
 
Well, decided to trace the wires from the ignition switch, the 12v supply and position 1 wire went straight to the loom. The position 2 and 3 wire went into a black box, obviously some alarm / imobiliser then back out into the loom. Bypassed the wires and she fired straight up !!

Not sure if this is an aftermarket immobiliser or land rover ??? Looked well fitted.

Anyway just got to put it all back together know, thanks very much to all who have offered advice and help.

Hi there, I'm really glad you got it sortd out, but I feel a bit daft:eek: :eek: as I have immobilser trouble when I renewed the ignition switch on my wife's Disco and I forgot to mention that :eek: :eek:

Oh well, it's me age guv'nr
