Hi all. I have just purchased a 1995 300tdi. I am wanting to do a full service on her but not sure exactly what I'll need. So far I've got:

Timing belt
Air filter
Oil filter
Fuel filter
Sump plug
Oil (should I go for 15w40 or is there a better oil to use) also how many litres will I need?

Am I missing anything or is there anything I should check as I have no idea when it was last serviced

Cheers guys

You will need in addition:
7.5ltrs of 10-40 or 15-40 good quality diesel specific oil for the engine;
6 ltrs of EP 80-90 GL4 or 5 transmission oil for both diffs and the transfer box;
3 ltrs of Dexron III atf or MTF 94 for the manual gearbox;
1 x serpentine belt
Clean out the fuel sedimenter and intercooler;
Replace the coolant - 10ltrs.

Thanks for the helpful advice. Think some people have forgotton the whole point of landyzone forum. For landrover owners to share info and help each other out. Especially less experienced owners like me. So Wiltshire landy man STFU!

So then you wouldn't be a Land Rover owner if it wasn't a Forum?

Makes me wonder what owners did in the days before the www and Forums
I know, books and manuals :D

They say 10w 40 for low miles and 15w 40 for high miles. If 10w 40 get B4/ mb 229.1 and if 15w 40 get a shpd [super high performance diesel] E3 /mb228.3 /ch-4 . The latter are commercial grade oils for heavy duty. B Q do carlube turbo diesel mineral oil that meets this spec 5ltr for £ 12.98. Change every 5/6 k.;)

na ya wrong mate why would someone want to read a book or manual or search for some info

when they can be a lazy bastid sit back in a chair and let everyone else do the hard work for them and spoon feed them the info:rolleyes:

Both the oils are the same with a SAE40 grade.
The w in a multigrade oil means the SAE grade is manufactured to behave as the w grade would when cold to specific low ambent temps.

If the engine is worn and using oil then a higher SAE grade oil may help in reducing consumption.

check timing belt unless you know when it was last done should be done every 60K ( I do mine every 50K ) Air,oil and fuel filters are cheap enough from Paddocks even if you buy the genuine Land Rover Oil Filter ERR3340
As far as Oil goes a good 15/40 mineral oil will be as good as any, the 300 engine is basically a tractor engine so you don't need expensive oil and certainly not fully synthetic. I use Wilko Motor Oil Mineral Diesel 15w 40 Motor Oil 5ltr at wilko.com You will need 7 ltrs so buy 2 x5 ltrs These engines will run on the expensive oils but will rattle their heads off so 15/40 is the oil I use and have always used , don't be fooled by the sales talk when it comes to oils.

Don't forget to change the coolant (flush or change the rad), brake fluid, oil in the front & rear diffs, plus the main gearbox and transfer box oils.

I go for the cheapest 15w40 mineral or semi-synthetic i can get my hands on at the time i am doing the service. Currently using John Deeres oil donated to me from a good friend who works john deeres for the council.

If it is branded JD oil that is some of the best you can get your hands on;) On a side note, the taxpayers are paying for it.How would you like for someone to steal something from you? Just asking

Also bin the EGR valve, remove air intake manifold and clean as best as possible short of getting it acid dipped like I did.
I also cleaned out the intercooler and hoses with brake cleaner (Get a 5L tub of the stuff if you can.) The amount of crap that came out made it more than worthwhile a job.

For how cheap they are, replace the plastic oil breather.

Perhaps change brake fluid too, especially if you've genuinely no idea when it was done last.

Definitely do the fuel sedimenter though as these often get overlooked.
I doubt mine was ever done looking at the years of gunk that came out of it.

Don't forget to get plenty of grease into the SOH nipples. If the SOH seizes things get nasty real quick :eek:

Oh man! You just had me googling SOH as I thought I'd overlooked something important, re read it & got it, need to go and put my donkey's ears on now......:hysterically_laughi
