Hi, I wonder if anyone can help.......
Discovery 2 auto, Sometimes when I select reverse gear I get a "clonk" noise, not everytime though. is this anything to worry about?
Thanks in advance. Paul

Hey there

My First TD5 had that problem it was the rear diff, you should jack it up and take the rear diff back plate off and have a look at the crown wheel for cracks etc as this may need replacing, also take a look at the U.J. coupling and pinions on the prop-shaft, our TD5 had two diffs one on the day we bought it!!! hope its only the one for you

Dont know about Disco 2 but my Disco 1 auto clonks when I select reverse. Its the splines on drive shafts in transfer box that get worn that cause it.Some people say they had same problem for years .One day there will be a big clonk and the wheels wont go round.Splines completly worn out. Then is a good time to mend it.:D

This problem exists in both manual and automatic transmissions as the bulletin lists replacement part numbers for both.

Here are the salient parts:

Bulletin No: 37/20/96
Subject: Gearbox Mainshaft Spline Wear
Affected Vehicles:
Discovery LJ 178205 onwards
Discovery LJ 506525 onwards
Defender LD 976480 onwards

Detail:
Some customers may complain of clonks and backlash in the transmission system. This may be due to gearbox/mainshaft spline wear. The clonk/backlash will be most apparent in stop/go traffic under overrun conditions or when maneuvering the vehicle during parking, etc. From transfer box number 28D 460996 F (Discovery) and 22D 461124 F (Defender) all factory built LT230 transfer boxes have a revised design of input gear, featuring lengthened splines and cross drilled oil feed holes. This modification eliminates the requirement for an oil feed disk (bulletin H415) and eliminates input gear/mainshaft spline fretting/wear. Coincident with this change, the transfer box identification number has been raised to Suffix "F".

Yes 22 years... Dont think it's wear I have had it from day one on both my disco and previous RRC. When Land Rover fitted a Borg Warner transfer box with a viscous coupling to the RRC in 1988 the clonk was gone, sadly this transfer box was never carried over into the disco.

Just seen this thread 'cos I was looking (!) for answers to the CLONK when I select reverse and then give it some welly on my Disco2 auto box.
Sounds like an expensive job, The Mad Hat Man, Any ideas of the cost anyone?
