Hi

Ive had my Discovery for about 2 months and ive never had a problem with it. About 3 days ago i took it over the exhaust in the salt water launching my boat, but when i drove home everything was fine. Then the next day i put new wheels and tyres on it and since then when im rolling to a stop with the clutch out its making a whining noise which sounds like its coming from the back but when i put the clutch in the noise stops???

can anyone help as the noise is starting to annoy me now.

Thanks

have you got water in an axle?

pressing the clutch would take the loading off the gears so the whining would stop.

i suggest check all wheelbearings for roughness just in case, but definitely check your axle oil isnt contaminated.

the thrustbearing has nothing to do with it, they only make a noise with the clutch pedal pressed.

cheers

OR have you simply caught one of the disc shields when replacing the wheels and it has been bent slightly into a disc.

these usually result in a "shingg shingg" noise and is usually only heard when rolling sloly. this wouldnt be affected by the clutch though.

check all of the above!!

When you have sorted the whiny grindy noise you may want to consider using a strop to launch/recover your ship.

The orange snake in the pic is a 10m load strap without the ratchet thing on it, a loop sewn in each end. It was £8 from a place advertising load straps, I asked for it special.

It's enough faff replacing the trailer wheel bearings every trip, I'm not starting on the Disco too. Dunk trailer not tractor.

saying that when i washed the jeep i could see a creamy oil coming out of the back of the diff were theres a slight crack (not bad)

ill start with changing the oil in the diff and take it from there i think.

Ok urm, having a crack in the diff pan is a pretty big problem! And submerging a cracked axle is salt water is nigh on ridiculous!!

Sorry mate but I think you've already shagged your diff...

If the salt water got in the clutch housing its gonna rust it has screw holes your ment to block off to stop water geting in :censored:

as it says above incase you missed it the noise is coming from the back of the jeep and i dont know what your driving but my clutch is in the front.

point taken. but were the oil is ive rubbed off all the oil and cleaned and cant find the crack and that was 2months ago but know i seen the cream on the waxoil?

Sticking an old disco in salt water like that you not gonna have it long anyway & as Mr Noisy says looks like you f,,,ed all ready if you got a cracked Diff & you didnt say how far it was in the water plus noise travels :5bbeatdeadhorse5:

My point is that if it's whining then there's a mechanical issue.

I got water in my diffs and although still working fine they whined : both ring and pinions were pitted, IE, scrap :(

ive changed the diff oil and its still making a noise. think ill look for a new axle save changing the diff.

plus i love how people say that its killing the jeep with the salt water but common its a land rover, plus its got about 4 coats of waxoil on her and washed after every messy outing.

but for everyone who had suggestions thanks
everyone that didnt, go finish wrapping it up in cotton wool.

salt water will kill it ,you look at any that have been in saltwater even if well washed ,if its a rough one then maybe doesnt matter but a bit late if you want to keep it

salt water is indeed bad mate. speeds up any kind of corrosion 10 fold. but hey ho.

anyway, just fit a diff mate. back axle diff swap is REALLY easy, like 20 minute job.

FAR easierr than swapping axle, believe me that is a few hours job and considerably more messing about.

cheers

You would be better with a JEEP if you gonna keep puting it in salt water no one would miss one of them things rusting away but hey keep going dont moan at the rest of us when it f###s up :multiply: with your jeep
