I had a thread going in teh general chat section, but anyhow, problem diagnosed at last. Cracked head syndrome... after replacing pretty much everythong else.
My question is simple, would this cracked head have possibly emulated symptoms akin to injector problems.

I brought my Disco to a LR dealer complaining of extremely rough sound in engine and lack of power at times. Read outs indicated falty injectors. When I replaced all 5 at a cost of over €2000 a few days later I was plagued with slow starting problems, whihc after relacing essentailly everything from fuel pump, filter housing, pipewrok to regulator valve etc.. (at a cost of another €1100) it transpires that he head is cracked.
My question is did I spend all this money in vain and was it the cracked head all along that caused all my fuel issues with teh disco...

Any suggestions on what to do with my cracked head. Can they be welded? Is it advisable to put in a new unit on a 195000 mile engine....

What year is it? From your description of regulator pipe being replaced it sounds like a 2002 on model?

Where did the head crack? If it is a 2002 onwards model then cracked heads are VERY rare.

Apart from the starting problems what other symptoms are there? Any overheating? overpressurising? oil in water or vice versa? loss of coolant? diesel in your oil? diesel in your coolant? etc

This has come up before. If you are confident that yours can be welded and have a good welder then you could go ahead. General advice though is not to use a recon head because a) they may have been welded up badly and b) Landrover say that the heads can't be skimmed. My advice would be to put a new head on and make sure the dowels are metal, not plastic.

b) Landrover say that the heads can't be skimmed. quote]

Land Rover skimmed mine for the last owner when the head gasket went! (I have the bill)

What he is saying is that landrover say that you shouldn't get the head skimmed as it is specially hardened and by skimming it it's weakened. I've had my head skimmed too but the fact is they say you shouldn't.

Now that's quite impressive. The manual specifically states that the TD5 head has a specially hardened surface and therefore can't be skimmed (ie you can skim it but it wrecks the surface). I hope they gave you a full warranty on it! Actually quite a few on this forum have had their heads skimmed. You takes your choice I suppose.
(Sorry - others have said the same thing while I was typing this...)

Yeh! suprised me too when I saw that it had been skimmed (actualy written on the bill) The vehicle had been serviced at the same LR dealer for over 5 years, was a company car, no exspense spared so I see no reason why they skimmed it as they could have probably got away with chargeing for a new head!

If you are going to put a new head on, especially at that mileage, you might consider a second hand engine. If you can be sure of your supplier it could be cheaper.

What price would a head be 1200 +vat turners ? Never mind the milage what is the body work, chasis, gearbox like, you'll spend what 2,500 plus so you want to drive it ofr another 4 or 5 years ? boound to be other repirs, what else have you replaced thus far..
fun deceisions , NOT . I'm trying to find another head and this welding business keeps comming up, the cornish boys openly say the weld every port, regardless of what leaks, and offer a few month guarantee but of course labour cossts and hassle plus risk of it blowing up if you get serious diesel leak inot oil and it then pulling diesel/oil into the air intake no fun and more money.. I 'm just ****ed at having bought the thing, got it repaired, con rod, crank grind, etc to find despite head test still getting diesel in oil... new heads the answer if you can bite the bullet and want to keep the car a few years.

Who told you the problem is now a cracked head, not the same peeps who have replaced the injectors etc is it?

If it is, I would be getting a second opinion.
