Hi

the wifes disco 300tdi auto has chuked a wobbler on the near side front cv joint, new one is now orderd, new problem now... transfer box is jumping out of drive ... but it will drive if i put the diff lock on... any ideas as to what has happend .....

If you have a broken shaft it will not drive without difflock. It wont jump out as you mention it simply will turn the front axle with least resistance. Difflock will lock the propshafts together and give you drive aslong as both rear wheels have grip.

Half shaft and or CV. You could remove the front propshaft and drive it in difflock. Some people carry a spare drive member that has a hole drilled out bigger than the splines so that you can steer sortof.

EDIT, if you remove the front propshaft you may find the steering will try and lock up and be dangerous to drive on the road (although I have driven back 30 miles like this before now to get a vehicle home) Round abouts are interesting when the steering locks. Jai

if i take the front prop off will it still drive ?

It will probably still drive, but one end of the shaft thats broken will still be being turned with the wheel going round.

Whatever's broken will have dumped bits of shrapnell into the axle casing, so grinding the broken bits together AINT going to make matters any easier to sort out, when you get the parts to look at it....

if you only need to get it back remove the propshaft, and remove the drive members from the front (catch the oil with old rags) then difflock in and drive it back to where you can work on it.

Got the old gal back ok !... still waiting for the new cv's to arrive, i can then start pulling it appart & find out if the half shaft has broke...
