I have a 1995 Disco 3.9 V8i Auto with LPG conversion. When you remove the expansion tank cap and smell the coolant it smells very strongly of petrol almost as stron as if you smell inside the petrol filler! I have had various people suggest it could be anything from the inlet manifold gasket, head gaskets or even pourous block. It doesn't seem to be using much water and I did a 150 mile trip yesterday and the temperature stayed in the middle all the way.
Has anybody had a similar problem? If so what was the cause?

Has the V8 got a fuel cooler on it? The TD5 ones are prown to blowing and causing this.

My TD5 is currently suffering from diesel in the coolant even though my fuel cooler is bypassed. I had the same previously which was rectified when the headgasket was done. It has recently come back though.

To be honest i don't know, I am new to Discovery ownership but it looks like I am going to have to learn quickly with this thing!!

I can't see any form of water cooling for the LPG system.

Is it common for the inlet manifold gasket to go and get fuel transfer into the cooling system?

there wont be a cooler for the lpg but there is likely to be a vaporiser which uses the coolant feed to warm up the liquid gas and turn it into gassy gas...

my first thought would be HGF but that could be cos that is all I have on my mind at the moment...
