Stuck in the 1980s
Hi,
Im sure the R380 box has been discussed to death. Ive got a slightly obscure question. Mine with 132K miles works perfectly and has had regular oil changes.
My wife drives it more than me. Unfortunately she has fibromyalgia and is finding the change uncomfortable and a bit heavy, I dont notice any difficulty with it whatsoever except a bit of a heavy change 1st to 2nd when the oil is cold.
(I have suggested changing it for an auto but she doesnt like driiving autos!)
I recall an ad in the landrover mags 3-4 years back for an oil which was claimed to radically improve quality of change on an R380, it cost around £40. I cant for the life of me remember what make it was.
Has anybody used it and can comment on how they found it? or can point me in the right direction of where to find it?
Cheers

Gav

These kinds of claims are sometimes made about the 'Evolution' brand oils
Difflock Evolution 1 Fully Synthetic Gear Oil - 1 litre I've tried it and whilst it feels a little smoother it probably wouldn't make a radical difference for someone who suffers muscle pain. Another possibility is the 'Slickshift' modified gear change mechanism SLICKSHIFT FOR DEFENDER | For Land Rover Enthusiasts which gives you a gear change rather more like a car. But it's for the defender rather than the discovery - sorry!

Speak to someone at opie oils - they helped me choose a good fully synthetic m/t oil that was cheaper than the evo stuff, but from a recognised brand rather than difflocks own (re)brand. My gear change is pretty good now, and adding fully synth to the diffs and transfer box along with some ZX1 has given me loads less drag and a noticeable improvement in mpg.
