Hi everyone, hope your all well, I'm a new one to this forum and was hoping someone could shine some light for me please. I had a 2004 manual discovery 2 landmark which sadly was no longer road worthy so i upgraded to a 2002 metropolis auto which is an absolute peach for the year. However when I'm setting off it will go through the gears like it should but when ever i come off the accelerator it knocks itself into neutral and starts free rolling, and then when Im starting to slow down it doesn't down gear at all i just have to hope that the brakes don't fail?? Is this normal for the auto box or is something a miss here? It just doesn't seem right too me and anyone I've asked is only familiar with the manual box. Any information would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance

I would be checking the fluid level as a starting point. Most autos that I come across with gear change issues are found to have little or no oil left in the box!!
Other than that, people with knowledge of such things will be waking up shortly.
:D

Try going downhill and knocking it into 3rd or 2nd or EEK first, if you are going slowly enough, you ought to get engine br:(aking. If not yes you really do have a bit of a problem!

Thanks. Ive just tried this whilst driving home.. Nothing at all different it just goes into neutral and starts free rolling, doesnt down gear what so ever, do you know what this could be? Im starting to wish i hadnt bothered with the auto ‍♂️

Sh!t!
I am not an autobox expert.
However there may be a faint chance it is something to do with the xyz switch.
But your best bet is to hope @jamesmartin pops on soon.
Best of luck!

does it actually jump out of gear or just have no engine braking ,have you tried driving in 3 and see if its the same

Just been for a quick lap in 3.. no change at all, it doesn't jump out of gear or seem too anyway it more falls out if anything, the engine just goes to idle when ever i let off accelerator and then just rolls along?? Something definitely not right the engine has also cut out on me once whilst going back down to idle

no engine braking at in 3 then or warning lights, check oil as previously suggested, has this just started and was ok before

Have a look at your injector loom plug, a lot of cutting out issues seem to stem from there, tiny bit of oil causes all sorts off strange problems,
Check MAF sensor is pulling 55-65 kg air a hour at idle if this goes faulty it’s known to interfere with gear changes.
Check box oil level (engine running in park, handbrake on Hard) check oil colour, bright red- new/ dark red old but ok, brown, needs changing, black- knackered.
Are you getting m&s lights flashing? This is often a xyz switch fault.
When testing box put it in sport mode 3rd as it locks it in 3rd where when you leave it in normal and put it in 3rd it just stops it going into 4th but doesn’t stop it gearing down or freewheeling.
My auto does freewheel when coasting or very light throttle down hill but also seems like it try’s to engine brake.. odd feeling until you get used to it but generally there a reliable old box. Hope this helps, Rich.
