This site has helped me out a lot and I read it more than I should. Over the past year I have reached the conclusion the the 2.5 diesel is actually a very reliable vehicle, particularly given that they are mainly over a decade old. Wammers and Datatek are almost like monks or nuns with a repetitive incantation. (Please don't take offence).

Replace the air bags
Don't buy rubbish glowplugs
Wammers "Check the fuel delivery"
Datatek "And replace your blessed lift pump"
Repent and give unto Caesar that which due unto Landrover and get a new RF receiver.
A big battery is not just for Christmas.
Beyond the inconvenience of a dodgy ventilation system and limited headroom as the lining comes down, they are remarkably reliable.
Get a Nanocom Evo anyway.

and keep the cooling system up to scratch

says the man who had a heater hose fail in the motorway roadworks
:D

Naw, I'm not surprised. As part of my servicing I give all the pipes a good squeeze but the failure was on the bottom of the wee horse-shoe shaped pipe at the back of the block so I totally missed it.

You know that you've picked the wrong place to break down when the RAC are watching you from the window of their control room but refuse to come anywhere near you!!!

Nah, if you'd been female they'd have been down in a shot and crawling all over your tailgate, so to speak.

Where did you get that hose behind block I've never seen an aftermarket listing for one ??

That's the only one behind there i know of.

Ah yes ;) thanks I remember there being a horizontal pipe behind block just had a look there is but its metal and that pipe you showed is the tail end of said pipe going into head . Tar I remember looking doing a check of pipe but that was ages ago :)

PCH000030 £2.49 at Island + post or £25.14 at Rimmers + post. Take your pick. Mind you you get two clips with it from Rimmers. :D:D:D

That's the bugger that let go. It was New Year's Eve and none of my local suppliers were open. Had to fit a two foot length of heater hose to make the bend without kinking but it got me to Scotland and back.

Thank you gents for the derail with Dogsbody's special.

My point was that, save for the common issues, covered in numerous posts by Wammers and Datatek, the diesels are not at all unreliable for their age.

Perhaps not in the Volvo 240 or 740 league but far better than most old motors that one wouldn't **** in for fear of increasing their value.

The M51 Engine is reasonably bullet proof aslong as it is serviced.....

It is the rest of the vehicle that lets it down!!

But what particularly? There really isn't that much. Half a dozen common faults? Perhaps a dozen? How does that stack up against a Jag, Merc or Lexus of similar vintage?

You're right. Then try finding a Jag, Merc or Lexus forum that will help you dig yourself out of the sticky brown stuff when it does happen.

Common faults? Gearbox, diffs, UJ's, EAS, fusebox, rads, viscous fans, water pumps, leak off pipes, FIP timing, loss of sync, door lock failure, all fault's I have never experienced on any other car at double the mileage. Mercs after the hook up with Chrysler are, by the CEO's own admission, crap, but getting better now they are independent again. Lexus until the last few years was super reliable and even my XJS never gave me any worries.
