Hi all, not had the pleasure of owning a landy yet however i am on an active search with £9000 to spend. Absolutely love and always have loved the defender however i have tonight been scared to death by the amount stolen after reading the security forum.
I must admit ive been 65 / 35 defender / disco for a few weeks now and being as there are a few traveller sites not to far from me and my landy will be kept on the driveway i think from what ive read on here im now leaning towards the disco.
Am i being naive in thinking the discovery is less easily pinched and less desirable to the theives than the defender?

You might wana give abit more info on what it is your looking for, as in what your guna use it for, how often, etc.

And most Newbies start by introducing them self in the dedicated "Introduce yourself" thread

pc lol i guess i worded that like i was still at work haha let me refrase that. I dont want to go spend all my savings on a vehicle ive always wanted only for it to be stolen by some dirty robbing scumbag whom you should be able to torture to death if caught. I'd rather have an almost equally capable, probably more comfortable version which was less deisrable to the fookers.

well mostly it'll be for carrying various tools around for work and the odd trailer pull to the tip, however i also want to use it for camping and a long trek to south west ireland twice a year. Sorry im in the wrong thread, i thought i was in the right place lol

for £9k youll get a nice defender.

I agree with wickford, Spend £8-8.5k on a smart fender then spend the rest on making your new toy as un nickable as possible.

Immobilser (thatcham)
DiskLok (real one)
Security post(s) (one driveway)
Tracker
etc..

oh almost forgot, loved the look of greenlaning been buying LRO magazine for a while, there are some places id love to try, nothing to challenging or destructive to the vehicle or counrtyside (pc head again) but the odd jaunt up a pretty hillside lane would be nice :)

That one is lovely, exactly what i want except im hoping for a td5. thanks :)

Okay ill keep on looking then. From what i saw in there ill take it as gosple for now that a disco would be much less nickable although i full appreciate that if they want it they will have it all you can do is protect it as best you can. Thanks for you help :) Im sure i have plent more questions soon, although hopefully one of them wont be where is my landy ? lol

That's true of any vehicle, but more so with Defender's cos their standard security is pant's. If you buy a Defender, consider buying a cheap run-around so that you can park it in front of the Landy, that way they'll have to work a lot harder to pinch it.

Hi, as you've had some less than helpful replies maybe I can offer up a bit more rational. :)

- What do you truly plan to do with it?

- Is comfort, as in creature comforts, noise, interior, etc an important factor to you?

- How long do you plan to keep it?

In short Defenders are great, but they are somewhat of a compromise not all can live with. People moan about lack of elbow room, a seat that won't go back far enough, too noisey, fuel tank too small, not comfy enough....

And guess what - Land Rover listened!!

And they built the Range Rover, then Disco and D2.

These all (even the D2 to a large extent) are a 100" Defender chassis with a bigger, more roomy, more comfortable body on top.:doh::doh: :D

Their 4wd system is pretty much the same or identical (depending on models), the same engines, gearboxes and transfer boxes have been used in them. Axles are pretty much the same and even the box section of the chassis is pretty identical.

So in terms of off road ability a Defender actually isn't any more capable in terms of suspension and AWD ability. The only advantage a Defender has is a D90 is shorter and all Defenders have short overhangs and are less bulky. So in tight terrain they are more nimble.

On this basis a Disco makes sense, it'll even tow the same weights as a Defender as is a much better people lugger.

Downsides are Disco's aren't as good at hauling and the nicer interior makes them less rufty tufty.

Defender's also have far superior residuals. Spend £9k on a Disco and expect it's value to tumble compared to £9k spent on a Defender.

Cult status - the Defender has it. But there is a big Disco following too.

Your best bet is go and test drive on of each and see which you genuinely prefer - its the only way! :)

10/10 for an excellent informative post .... but the OP would have gotten this info had they done a quick search of LZ ... which incidentally most people expect to happen before a new thread is made;)

if every body just searched there would be nothing to answer which is the biggest reason for some of us been here ,i thought it was excellent mr 300bhp

Thanks for your response 300BHP/ton
With all the reading and interest I’ve had for some time i realise that the defender would be noisy with little in the way of creature comforts, and personally i have no problem with that.
I plan on keeping it for hopefully 10 years plus all being well.

I love going camping and this involves 400 mile round trips 4 of five times a year, as well as a couple of trips to visit the grandparents in south west Ireland a year. The rational side of me says that the discovery would be far more comfortable for these activities.
I would also like to do a little greenlanding after reading LRO, nothing to hard core mind.
The vehicle would also be used every day to carry my tools and occasionally to pull a trailer to the dump.

You are absolutely correct though in that i really should go and test drive the two and get a more personal opinion.
The security of the vehicle is a big thing for me from tonight, its sad to think this way but no matter how much i love something if its really that attractive to thieves id rather not have it in the first place. There is nothing worst than that feeling especially now i am more aware of just how many defenders seem to go walkies . . .
In summary although i don’t like the discos looks as much maybe i really need to redefine my choice meter to 50 / 50 for now. Have a drive of both and maybe that will help me decide J cheers

Agreed, and I was also new to LR's when I found LZ ... BUT I read this 1st, spent a lot of time searching for answers before sighing up/posting. Yes I agree a forum need's new post's to stay fresh, but these day's it seem's to me as people expect the info immediately or else they'll have a hissy fit (frick try Vauxhall forum's ... so slooooooowwwww).

Incidentally this is not a dig at you in any way faithless771;), more an observation of new member's ignorance of the past year.
