Thanks for your response 300BHP/ton
With all the reading and interest I’ve had for some time i realise that the defender would be noisy with little in the way of creature comforts, and personally i have no problem with that.
I plan on keeping it for hopefully 10 years plus all being well.

I love going camping and this involves 400 mile round trips 4 of five times a year, as well as a couple of trips to visit the grandparents in south west Ireland a year. The rational side of me says that the discovery would be far more comfortable for these activities.
I would also like to do a little greenlanding after reading LRO, nothing to hard core mind.
The vehicle would also be used every day to carry my tools and occasionally to pull a trailer to the dump.

You are absolutely correct though in that i really should go and test drive the two and get a more personal opinion.
The security of the vehicle is a big thing for me from tonight, its sad to think this way but no matter how much i love something if its really that attractive to thieves id rather not have it in the first place. There is nothing worst than that feeling especially now i am more aware of just how many defenders seem to go walkies . . .
In summary although i don’t like the discos looks as much maybe i really need to redefine my choice meter to 50 / 50 for now. Have a drive of both and maybe that will help me decide J cheers
By the sounds of it a Defender does seem more you. And for the record I actually find them quite comfy to drive, rugged and noisy I admit, but still comfy.

Have you decided if a 110 or 90 would better suit? 90's IMO look better proportioned and a more nimble on and off road. But they are pretty lousy at hauling people. A 110 does this much better.

As for security - well it's a risk. I'd advise adding in a couple of hidden kill switches, under the dash, or behind the passenger seat.

Then get a top notch alarm fitted and a steering lock.

If you are concerned with security and theiving scum then a disco is probably the better option. Even with security (kill switch, clutch claw, immobiliser, tracker, steering lock) if the bastards want it they will have it, everything is a deterrant and not going to stop a determined scumbag. Dont get me wrong I love my 110 and dont think i'd have any other lr other than maybe a series but for long journey comfort the disco wins.

For your budget you can get a very nice disco with better security that will be more than capable of doing a few lanes.
