Hi, can any of you guys give me some advice. Yesterday i was out in my 2007 defender when it was starting to clunk going into gear, then after stopping at traffic lights I put it in gear but there was no drive, just a grinding like noise, phoned the AA but the guy that came out didnt have a clue, anyway to cut a long story short, the defender suddenly had drive and moved with the handbrake on. Any ideas

try putting it in diff lock, if it worked with hand brake on it would suggest a failure in rear axle,if you put hand brake on and jack just 1 rear wheel up, if it turns fault lies within axle either half shaft or diff

Thanks for the reply mate, did all that with diff lock and that it still didnt move. Couldnt do anything with the car really as was on a busy road, just put it in a garage close to where it broke down. Dont want it to be a massive repair bill, its in a garage now.

Tdci models are known for failure of the adaptor spud shaft between the gearbox and transfer box, the splines connecting the gearbox output shaft to the adaptor shaft shear off due to them being fitted dry and you are left with no drive.

It's similar to the gearbox output shaft splines on earlier gearboxes failing where they mesh with the transfer box input gear (no adaptor shaft on those models, just a direct coupling).

If it is that then the fix is to remove the transfer box and replace the adaptor shaft/coupling, applying plenty of grease to the new one. Hopefully it's something simpler like a diff/halfshaft though as they're a lot less work to fix!

Ye it drove with the handbrake on much to the AA guys bewilderment.
thats the big thing diagnostic wise, if shaft on box has stripped its splines ,hand brake would have no effect so would make you look rear wards, but hand brake might have just been a fluke as splines held for a while

Got word back from the garage today, they said it was the offside half shaft and offside drive flange. Costing around £650 including parts and labour, needless to say im spewing.

you could have bought the parts for 60 quid plus, it sounds llike diff lock isnt fully locking if you had no drive with diff lock engaged ,lever can be adjusted

Bloody hell.
Front or rear?

That's robbery don't pay that, if rear it's about 30mins work lol

Front is a bit more involved but not more than a couple hours

Not sure mate, guy says 2 1/2 hours labour. Im kinda stuck so not really got an option. Gonna get myself a Haynes manual and learn bloody quick.

Just got the car in October and have spent over 1200 on it so far including this bill. Had to get the EGR valve repaced and also got it serviced at the same time. Kinda sickened by it all and thinking about cutting my losses and selling it, but I do love it and its as smart as..... mmmm what to do.
