I know this might be how longs a piece of string type question but is it likely to occur anytime soon on other half shafts or flanges?

If one has gone...odds on the others may follow suit in short order....

That being said, the one that has gone could have had a manufacturing defect causing it to fail early. closer inspection of the rest *could* reveal more.

Great just what I didn't want to hear. Is there any easy signs to look for? Car has just under 70.000 miles on the clock, is that a kinda ballpark milage these things go at?

You can check the other rear half shaft by just undoing the drive flange and pulling it out.

If it was me I would fix it myself and just drive it. The other shafts may last thousands more miles with no problem.

Changing the rear half shaft is easy, search for a guide on here or the Internet in general then post a thread on here asking for part numbers and we can walk you through it

It's literally no more than an hours work if you go slow and drink lots of tea. On a tdi era you don't even need to take the wheel off (not sure about a tdci)

£650 is genuinely daylight robbery

As above....

The others may last forever.....it all depends on what caused the failure in the first place. Mechanical wear - then others may follow. Manufacturing defect - the others may go on for 1000's more miles.

Cheers guys,
I kinda know i've been ripped off but at the time i never really had any other option. In future i will do these things myself with help from you guys.

If they're replacing the halfshaft and the flange it suggests that the splines may be the problem. This may also explain why it moves sometimes and not others - sometimes the splines are slipping and sometimes catching, which is not unusual when things are just on the point of stripping completely. It's hard to tell when a halfshaft is about to snap as this is often sudden, but when you look at your drive flanges and drive shafts you'll get some idea of how worn they are. If the profile looks a bit like a circular saw then they're worn. They've got to do quite a bit of work as they're what pushes the car along. So it's a good idea to make sure they've got some lubrication. As standard there is a plastic cap to keep the grease in and the dirt out, and you can get aftermarket ones with a screw on cap so you can put some oil in to keep the splines moist.

Bloody hell £650, i would have driven to Dundee from here fixed it on the side of the road and still not charged you that much. ( well i might if i had to use the 90 as it has its winter boots fitted (ins turbo special traxs)

i managed to strip a front out trying to tow a trailer through knee deep soft ground & cow ****, mine drove with diff lock in.

Reckon it took couple of hours on the ramp in the workshop and i had never done one. Just done my rear seals which involve the stripping out of the drive members and flanges took an hour a side with coffee and i fixed the rear brake adjustment as well.

Haha now you tell me. Was desperate at the time but can assure you all I won't be paying that again. Got a flange in with the job as they come in pairs so i was told, so cant wait till the next one goes..... haha good ain.
Thanks again guys for all your advice, very much appreciated

Hate to tell you,, famous four do them individually anything from £25-£45 plus vat

Rear ones are a doddle, if you can change a wheel you can do them.

Just take the wheel off and just keep heading inwards until you have it in your hand.
