1995 D1 V8i 3.9

Hi all.

I have the lovely task of doing an oil and filter change on my disco. I've done one before on a modern car but not a landy.

What's the best order ri do it in as I've heard horror stories of airlocks in pumps followed by hours of fun with tubs of vaseline??????

drop sump plug out drain oil, pull filter off smear new one with oil stick back on put sump plug back in and pour in loads of oil, job jobbed.

I always try purging by putting as much oil in filter before fitting it but I've heard stories of air becoming trapped in pump if not done in right order?

Oil pump needs priming with vaseline before you run for first time. Oil and filter swaps have no such worries!

The oil pump on the V8 will not self prime, so it if gets empty it will not pump. There should not be a problem with an oil change, but do not wait a long time without oil in the engine before refilling. However it is not a big job to take the base plate off and pack the pump gears with Vaseline if necessary.

This was my next question.... The sump tray. It's gasket is showing signs of leaks and to be honest I doubt it's ever been taken off. I'd like to drop it give a good clean get all the sludge out and replace gasket so might do it all on one go but is it easy to do on the disco 1?

Not that easy just look at what is in the way, if its leaking like mine did a few years ago when I tried Mobil One fully synthetic oil I just nipped up the sump retaining screws, it's been ok ever since. Theres no gasket as such LR use a sealant.

In my many years of V8 engine oil changing I've never had an issue, not that I've done that many, early days a main dealer carries out the servicing but still don't worry about it :D
