crunch! BANG no drive! BASTID!

just spent the day taking the bro in laws gear box out, we were hoping to find a smashed cog or similar but no every thing seems ok, found a fair bit of play in the tranny box dog clutch but other than that seems ok,
the clutch looks fine, the gear box seems fine, the tranny box sounds notchy and rattlely but nothing seems jammed or broken so what could the problem be?

he said it started 2-3 days before it went bang with the gears clonking as they were engaged, he drove it about clonking, it then went bang with a metalic grating and he lost all drive, he could get a bit of drive by slipping the clutch but could only get to about 2 or 3 mph and only in low box, we have checked all diffs gear box's and clutch, but nothing is obvious and is very fustrating as you can imagine.

what is wrong with this disco any ideas folks????

Gearbox output shaft/transfer gear ? .

its nowt to do with the lay shaft is it and are all the splines ok on the clutch?

sounds like it could be half-shaft snapped or drive flanges stripped

the boxs have been seperated and seem ok:doh:

Mmm there was the other problem that the diff lock didn't work:doh:

cud that be a clue?

i did say last week before we started taking the box out we should get the diff lock opperated using a screwdriver or anything that would turn it, but we just waded in and took the box out

The difflock lever on the box has three positions, only the center and clockwise are used.

the only thing that puzzles me is the clonking into gear?
what would cause that?

and all the clonking, grinding and banging is coming from underneath the drivers seat

as the difflock keeps getting knocked out of gear?

could have been cv on it's way out .

at least we can get the diff lock working now the box is out
will make the diagnostics a bit easier next time
