what should the header tank be filled upto? i've been told there should be a stalk or something inside but mine hasnt.

There is a raised thingie that can be easly seen if the coolent level is below the top it, on a 300 D1 or D2, as they have the same plastic header tanks.

Early discos had the RRC steel header tank with the old style 'rad cap'.

If the level is correct it will also line up with the joint seam around the tank and if the tank is filled any higher then excess coolent will be blown out via one of the valves in the cap.

i will have a better look tomorrow but couldnt see anything. it does have a plastic header. so basically if i fill up to the seem, that will be fine? if the valve has already blown can it still be reused or will it need replacing?

dont rely on exspansion tank level to be sure full coolant system ,remove the two bungs one on rad and one on thermostat housing make sure there full ive seen plenty of engines very low on coolant but half full in exspansion tank ,its better to replace both bungs with brass ones

yea going to do this tomorrow as coldnt find a socket to fit, got bigger and smaller than it though, typical! rad bung is already brass and stat bung loks like its a brand new plastic one.

brass bungs. i`m at work right now and am now curious as to whether my td5 has got them. will have a look later today. are they an aftermarket item? can i get them from paddocks etc?ta

I don't need one but this is in my tool box just in case, the 0 ring will be one to suit if I ever fit it. It came from B&Q 1/2 BSP is the thread.

thanks discool. as soon as i saw the pic i realised. my old cx500 had the same plastic bungs in the rad and they too would sometimes shear off leaving just the thread in the rad.
brilliant idea T.M.H.M. my zzr11 has a bleed nipple on the thermostat housing for that same purpose.
ta

took the bungs out and filled up, warmed engine up and the header tank filled up and water was coming out of the cap.

is it bollocks ,they fit them cos there cheaper look and your expansion bottle cap its 15 psi on it which means that any pressure greater it lets it go,so over fill system and let it blow out what it doesnt need cos it cant suck more in if its low

Once the thermostat housing is full, put the new bung in and then draw off any surplus from the header tank.

is the idea of OE ones being plastic so that they CAN blow out under pressure? before something else lets go?

The only time the pressure can increase in the cooling system normanally is if you change the header tank filler cap for one rated at a higher pressure, if there is such a thing. I know that combustion gasses can also but we don't want that do we but as mentioned there is a safety valve..
