Hi,

Yesterday I noticed a small puddle of what was coolant by the OSF wheel. The car hadn't been used for 2 days and cold. I put some cardboard underneath and a couple of hours later there was more coolant. A bit of tracing and it seemed to be coming from the underside of the header tank. No more leaks overnight and I removed the tank this morning. The leak seemed to have come from what looks like a blanked off hole, 1 inch diameter. Picture below.

As I am in France at the moment and tomorrow have to drive the 300 miles to the ferry, I have KwikWelded a coin in the hole as a get me home measure and I'll get a new tank when back in the UK.

Howevero_O, the "hole" looks more than just a blanked off moulding hole and the strange broken item came out of the tank when I gave it a flush out.

Any ideas what the hole and "broken thingy" are for and, crystal ball time, will my "fix" cause any major problems?

Why do these things always happen at the last minute??

Many thanks

Leakage on the plastic tanks on Td5s is quite common.

You seem to have patched it up adequately to get home, but suggest getting a new tank when convenient, they aren't a huge amount of money, and quite easy to fit.

The hole is probably what you say, left over from manufacture.

Isn't that the connection for the EGR cooler?
If there nos hose in it and no EGR cooler on You D2, You cab just blank that off with a plug.

I have EGR and the cooler removed, and have a 18mm silicone plug on that connection in the expansion tank.

.. I also have the BMW expansion tank installed nowadays with the level sensor.

Many thanks, makes me feel better!

Thanks for your comment. The hole in question is in the centre, not the EGR one at the end.
