right i know here's yet another tyre thread :D
i'm getting into competition trials, had a trial the other week and did rather well, but my restricting factor by a country mile was my tyres, at's and wet mud hills don't mix too well.
now its a standard class so lifts arn't allowed so that restricts the size i can go up to 235/85/16 or 265/75/16 or equivelent imperial, now everyone else had 235/85/16 insa turbo special tracks, so that would be the obvious choice. . but i've found these
31/1050R15 Maxxis M8060 Trepador Tyre Only
pretty much the same price as equivelent special tracks, but i've not heard too much about them, apart from that every australian 4x4 vid i watch pretty much everyone has them. there must be a reason for this. ;)
my thoughts are, whats the harm in trying something different + the smaller rim diameter means i can reduce the pressures more = greater footprint =better grip :D
anyway does anyone have any experience with these ? or does someone know anything better than special tracks :D:D

begin !!

235/85R16 is the best size to go for.

Best of all is Maxicross pattern, but most clubs have banned them because they are too good and rip the ground to pieces.

This is Fedima's version of the maxicross:

Recip Maxi 3D are incredible, next best thing to dumper tyres:

These are great on flat ground, nothing works as well in a mud bog, but on a side slope they have zero grip, you'll just slide sideways.

Diamonds are a great all rounder, loads of grip in every direction.

This is what I use, but in 35/10.5R16, loads more grip than Insa Turbo. the sidewalls probably have more grip than most tyres on the tread.

i do trials and winch challenges with my landy and special tracks get my vote every time.

if you are going trials then i would recommend 235/85R16 but if you wanted to do winch challenges i would recommend 285/75R16 as they offer incredible amount of grip, even more than the an 35/10.50R16 simex et and at less than half the price but i recommend not going any bigger than 265/75R16 in an extreme pattern unless you upgrade the axle internals as every time you hit the angry pedal something normally goes snap.

hope this helps

fedima's it is then :D thought 235/85/16 would be best, got some wheels off my mate for £50 and a local tyre repairer has quotes £40 for fit and balance which is alright :)

NO!!!

well its not too bad you have more choices have a look at diaminds.

750 diamonds are great!! or any 33 inch tall tyre MEASURED sometimes 35's come up small so take a tape. I prefer skinny tyres as you can wind your steering stops in fully and the tyre on a decent rim (within regs) will not rub the radius arms and give best turning circle.

Fedima are a good pattern no doubt but I think they come up smaller than 33 inch and are quite a wide tyre.

I just picked up a pair of diamonds for my trialer

Have to go along way to beat diamonds

What regs are you playing with because some tyre types are banned under tyre rule 9a.

Well gone for a set of fedimas :) only heard good about them, everyone else in the class I using insa turbo special tracks so I'm sure the fedimas will be fine :) saw some today when I was at a breakers and try looked immense cant wait for them to arrive and have a play :D got 24 spline axles under now so should handle them fairly well

Simex pattern is by far and away the most popular, and yes the Fedima/Silverstone is better than the Insa.

Great post there by Spyderman, props :)

no they are not :p:p

iv had simex, fedima and every time i go back to my insa special tracks

simex good tyres but not as good as insa on rock
fedima to big, side walls to hard , tread cracks. i had a new tyre that was never used and it was full of cracks
silverstone are smaller than they say

the insa's on my 90 are 3 years old and still have 17mm tread and used everyday on the road

i reckon the 285 insa is the best tyre for most people for the money by far, but everyone seems to rave on about the height of the fedima, and insas simply are nt availabl;e large enough for a lot of people. the majority of big competition guys seem to use 35 or 37 by 12.5/13.5 simex, or failing that, boggers!

insas are better on the road than simex for sure and lets be honest, everyone is using them so they must be mustard :D

well they arrived today :D but the wrong size :( 285/75/16 and although they look VERY beasty they won't really do for my competitions :( and theyre's no 235/85 in the country till next month so he's sending me a set of malteiser kaymans instead, which are apparently exactly the same ? but have better side walls ? who knows, well see on thursday when they arrive :)

285's Very very wide for trials I'm no fan. Tall skinny tyres are my preference for trials. I'm running SATS at the moment and will swop to diamonds extra half inch/ three quarters of an inch height over SATs and are pretty much on the limit of AROC tyre height limit.

Have they not got any Diamonds. Being completly serious they a bloody good tyre for the money. or 750 16 pretty much (235 85) Fedimas tyre Direct in near us is usually very cheap (no connection) Never brought a tyre from him **YET! Few more weeks and I'll get a couple more for my 80 inch trials motor.

Not many LZ people actually take part in serious trials many go P&P and laning but not many take part regularly.

i'm not that far into it yet still on standard suspention on my 90 but enjoying it so far, i'e got another trial on the 13th so see how the new tyres go then :) have you heard much about the malatasers ?

I'm skint so working on a set I have 2 with 10mm tread will probably get 2 new from down the road but last thing on my list engine running is more priority at the moment Lol!
