Haven't been around for a while, sadly I had to sell my disco 300tdi and I now regret it :(

Anyway, I'm having a serious think about selling my current car and getting a TD5 :decision: I know about the air suspension issues and would be putting 2" lift springs on it and getting rid of the air bags etc.

What else should I be looking out for?

My cousin had one which "blew up" I was told the story but wasn't really listening (I'd had a few :p) The gist was that something oil related blocks up and starves the engine of oil - I got the impression it's not an uncommon thing to happen. Anyone know anything about this please?

What can happen - although most will have been sorted now - is that the original oil pump bolt comes undone, no bolt no oil pump, NO ENGINE!!
The best thing to do as soon as you buy your TD5 is buy a ready-loctited bolt, check the installed one and replace if necessary.

The biggest coming issue for DII's in general is the rotting out of the rear half of the chassis - check carefully. There's likely to be surface rust but that can be resolved.

Can someone tell me what all the abbreviations mean please?

Ace, cdl (centre diff lock?) etc

You asked a question, I took the time to answer your question to the best of my ability and you didn't bother to have the manners to say thank-you.

You'll get no further help from me:mad::mad:

Sorry biglad, been a hectic couple of days with one thing and another. I AM very grateful for any help anyone gives but there'd be a thankyou every other post if we were to go down that route!

So, this one comes to you all from a motorway service area on the Scottish borders, from my cab, on a much needed break and applies to anyone who's helped me.....

Thankyou very much!

I'd get a 300tdi over a TD5 every time.

Owned a TD5 for a bit and didn't get on with it one bit, too electrically, boring to drive, etc. 300tdi is a lot more straight forward, easier to fix yourself and a bit more fun to drive

How likely is a 2001 (Y) to still have the diff lock bits in the transfer box? I've read "early ones" still had it but didn't have the lever etc to engage it?

It is highly likely that the CDL will be in the trans box at this year of registration.

To verify you need to get under the car, look at the front end of the trans box and just above the front prop you will find a spigot (on a round 3 bolt plate) which is the operating component of the CDL. If you've got the spigot, you got CDL so you just need the lever assy and cable - approx £200 from several suppliers.

excellent, thankyou!

Just waiting on the guy calling me now before I can go look, assuming it's not sold by then - hopefully not.

Good luck, don't forget to look really hard at the rear end of the chassis for rust and general weakness. Take a toffee hammer or similar to tap around it.

Walked away :( mileage was on the high side (198k), no tax (so a problem to get it home) and made a squeel / grinding sound when I pressed the clutch and got worse when I pushed the gear lever towards 1st.

If the tax was there, I'd probably have chanced it but all things considered.....
