Hello,

Following my topic last week about third gear not selecting properly and the gear box grinding terribly when changing down from 4th to 3rd, I am hoping that I can fix the problem without having to assume that the syncro has gone, but as usual I do have a few questions:

1) Where do I find the master and slave clutch cylinders?
2) The (master or slave?) cylinder fluid reservoir under the bonnet behind the brake servo is full, could there still be a cylinder problem?
3) What exactly do I need to do to the master or slave cylinder in order to fix them?
4) Are there any risks that I should be aware of?

Thanks in advance for any help!

]1 yer slave cyl is on yer bellend..sorry bell housing yer master is attached to yer pedal

2 yeah yer could have a seal gone in th emaster cylinder

3 yer can change the seal but for all the cost and ease of doing it just put noo cyl on

4 never have unprotected sex with strangers

Cheers Slob! :D

Is it possible that this could be the problem with the bad 3rd gear selection though? The master cylinder reservoir is full, and it's only sometimes that 3rd doesn't select. The gearstick just doesn't want to push in, and then when changing down from 4th to 3rd it grinds. 3rd is really the only dogey gear!

Could a new master and slave cylinder be the fix even with these symptons?

uh-oh :(

Well if it comes down to the gearbox should a clutch cylinder bleed and fix not work, what kind of money do you think a local land rover specialist might charge to fix third gear in the box?

No more annoying questions after this!
Cheers Slob

If its your hydraulics then you could try this... put it into 1st, keep the clutch pushed fully in, rev the engine a little then change it into 5th - does it go straight in or does it crunch a little if it does that would indicate the clutch isn't releasing properly and there is some drag on the gearbox.

To be honest 1st and 2nd would crunch the worst if it was your hydraulics, when going into 3rd I can only assume you would be moving (at least in high ratio), slowing down or speeding up maybe but MOVING, so the gearbox is spinning anyway, so a little drag from the engine would not make much difference.

It would do it in reverse and 1st for sure if it was the cylinders, I am sorry but I honestly don't see it being that.

If the gearstick doesn't want to go in then your 3rd gear baulk ring is worn, as I have said about this before if you drive it carefully you DON'T need synco, perhaps going down into 3rd will be more difficult for you but learn to hold off a bit, brake while keeping the revs up with your right foot and drop down to into second. 2nd into 3rd should be a breeze with some practise...

You WILL be able to live with this problem with practise - gearboxes didn't have syncro for long enough and people managed...

Cheers Disco, I am trying to find a way around the problem whilst I'm driving but sometimes it just really makes a horrible grind and it makes me cringe! I'd rather get the problem sorted and I'm just hoping that it isn't going to cost more than 200 quid

Have you measured the clutch pedal height? Look in the manual for settings, then do a search cos someone asked the same question a month or so back an I gave them the benefit of my gearbox experiences.

What do you mean by ''have I checked the clutch pedal height''? Could there be a problem with my clutch pedal that is causing my 3rd gear problem? It's a good distance from the cab floor.

Hate to be a pessimist but i know this problem! It is the syncro on the third gear, and it can't cope in particular with syncing the road speed to the engine speed either up or down, but particularly down as the road speed is likely to be higher. As posted last week, it is particularly third as it is on a separate shaft (with reverse, which of course doesn't usually need syncro so not noticeable).
Two options are either live with it and get used to trying to match road speed with engine speed, which can be done and can significantly help with the problem (and if you adapt your driving style to do this you will dramatically increase the life of your gearbox, as per the post) or to have the gearbox looked at or replaced, both of which aren't hugely different in cost but you won't get a huge amount of change from £500. The gearbox will need to be taken out and opened up, by which time (if not doing it yourself) is worth putting in a recon, as per the post last week. Alternatively get a 2nd hand one off of fleabag (although most of the ones on there will probably have been disposed of because of this problem so watch out!) - hopefully you'll get one out of a write off without too much damage. You could always put yours on there after, likely the buyer will have given you the feedback before they put it in and discover it's duff - and anyway even if they do you can blame them for not having a scoobie!!! If you buy a recon they will take your old one in px.

I am almost certain the problem isn't caused by clutch, clutch travel, air in the system or anything else other than dodgy synk into third.

aww :( Well I did have that in the back of my mind but I was trying to put it off for as long as possible! I may look into getting a refurb or even px/ing my 90 for a newer one.

and when you take it for the test drive, just shift direct from 2 to 4 and vice-versa!

I really like my 90 and I want to keep hold f it for as long as I can, but £500 quid or so to get the gearbox fixed is too expensive. I'm going to shop around and see how cheap I can get it sorted for, thanks again Odenne!

Ha! I could just imagine the look on his face if I asked, "could you just do this for me?", handing him a basket full of bearings and gaskets!
