But should stress i don't think this is gonna make yer box pop imminently, it's just inconvenient and a bit embarassing when drooling at someone in a short skirt and yer gear change goes crunch loudly. If you can get hold of a 2nd hand box off fleabag or the like then have some time to mess about and recon it pref with that kit, you'll have a thousand pound job for about £250, if you don't mind getting yer fingers black and know what yer doin. You should still be able to change gear carefully, it's an acquired knack!
 
It wud o bin more memorable for you to have turned 'senior' by postin an xmas kiss in my fred... Insted you turn senior postin summat sensible ffs..
 
Third gear on a separate shaft???? Wot gearbox have you got????

Did yer do a search for the post the other month? An if the clutch peddle is to near the floor, from memry it should be 240mm, then the piston in the master cylinder wont travel far enough an so the clutch won't release enough so you'll get a crappy gearchange. I don't think this will cure the problem but it's worth a look an it costs nowt, details are in the downloadable manual on here somewhere.
 
I did search for the post but I don't know whether or not I found the right one. My clutch pedal is a long way off the floor so I'd assume its alright. Just out of interest though: My master cylinder push-rod cover has no gasket and only has one screw holding the cover to the metal casing (as opposed to 6 which it should have), so I have to keep un-doing it and spraying a little bit of WD40 onto the rod every now and again to stop the squeaking which has just started again these last few weeks.

Also worth mentioning is the fact that this problem has got worse sinse I drove to Newcastle and back last week. I was doing between 65 and 75 up and down the A1 covering 250 miles, so is it possible that I've seized something up with a lack of oil in the gearbox or anything daft like that?

I'm almost certain that my syncro has gone, but I'm just trying to fire as much as I can at you hoping that someone will say "Oh!!! I know what your problem is Possy!".

Also, whilst I'm typing away, what tool bit do I need to unscrew the LT77 gearbox filler cap? It looks to me like a rectangular / square notch. Will my Grandads socket set have anything like this in it?

Just use a 1/2 inch socket drive to undo the filler. I had a disco with the synchro problem on 3rd gear for about 2 years. It never got any worse I just got used to it. As far as I know it's still going now so you don't need to panic.
 
I don't know what's wrong with the bloody thing. It was struggling to go into third coming home from Argos earlier. so I thought that I'd take the top off the gearbox and have a look at the springs which direct the gear stick into third gear, just in case one of them had dislodged or something. I didn't actually manage to find the springs, but I did manage to remove the gear stick and give the gear stick ball joint a bit of a clean and a grease over. The things run absolutely perfectly sinse and its even changed down into third from fourth at speed without grinding or refusing to select.

I did make it crunch into first though which was slightly alarming, so have the tables turned or have I still got an knackered syncro that I'll learn to live with or get replaced?
 
NO NO NO... please POS we have been patient with this, I am sorry but its a complete coincidence, the gearbox does not crunch because of a a few unclean parts where the stick goes into the box. You CANNOT see anything from there.

Exactly! It's more likely that you have somehow subconciously "gelled" with the gearbox and are changing gar in a more compassionate manner, like me and Discomania wrote in the post last week. It is possible to drive your car without a clutch and syncro simply by being the syncro and matching engine speed to road speed, even if you go some way to doing this it will help the syncro and, like driving itself, if you get into the habit you won't even notice you're doing it (although your passengers will as they will have a much nicer ride!)

Post 17 is my conclusion.

There int no springs that direct the gear stick into third gear, It's all done with selector forks. There is a detent spring and ball that hold the selector shaft in the three fore and aft positions. But unless it's falling out of gear I wouldn't suspect this.

If it was the synchro then it would be noticably worse when the gearbox was cold.
