Hi all,
gave my td4 a real good run today,Exeter in Devon to Headcorn in Kent and back again approx 455miles.On the way back she started to suffer quite badly from clutch fade, so much so that it was very hard to get in gear.Any ideas on what the prob could be and price to fix.
Thanks

hey loadmeat.

i tell you, its that M5, every time my clutch plays up if always on that road.

well are you having any slipping aswell? week after i bought my TD4 freelander the clutch started doing that, i found feathering it helped it clonk into gear.

but then every time i put a load in it, or towed a trailor it would slip alittle.

turned out to be the clutch master cylinder, or the slave cylinder, i can never remember. replaced that and it was fine. for a while.

your problem could be that, i dont know if clutch fluid is affected by heat, maybe yours is getting old and as it heats up its wither becoming thicker, or thinner and playing up.

but you could also just be low on fluid, or have air in the line and it may need bleeding.

i dont suppose you have a squeek when you pust the pedal down?

you may need to sit on if for a few days and see if it only plays up when warm or not. its a bit of a tricky one with out more info.

anyway, the above are assuming you have a hydrolic clutch. what is it your driving? freelander or disco? year?

Its a td4 freelander 2001.Have check fluid level and thats fine.Is it possible to bleed the system atall, oh and there is no slip or strange smells, but there is about 1 inch of what i can only describe as free movement not before the clutch engages but before you feel any resistance on the pedal.
Any thoughts.

well, when i had the cylinder done i had no free movemement at all, the pedal was hard straight away so i wouldnt have thought it was that.

i personally never bled my clutch, the garage doing the work did, as it was under warrenty at the time.

my squeek was really annoying on the pedal, i finally tracked it down to a rod going through the bulkhead off the clutch, after pulling the gator up it and the spraying with silicone spray the squeek went, and the clutch felt a hell of a lot better, i'm sure my gear changes got better. maybe you could try that before taking it to a garage. PS, not matford LR.

good garage? where are you? actually exeter? or honiton etc.

tomorrow shoot down to your local car bits place and buy form silicone spray. its like WD40, but not oil, its silicone. you can use it on your electric window rubbers to speed the windows up as it doesnt damage rubber, anyway...

this is where it gets fun. kneel outside the drivers door, try to lean backwards under the dash to see the top of the pedals, the clutch is fixed at the top, and there is a connection running through into the engine bay.

on that connections is a ribbed rubber gator, grab that baby and try to slide it either up or down top expose whats inside it. this is either your clutch cylinder, or a linkage to it, i dont really know. either way where it disapears into the bulkhead it gets dry and snags.

here comes the fun part, give it s good spraying with out getting it in your mouth/eyes, push the pedal a few times with your foot then repeat a few more times.

replace the gator to its orriginal position and see how you go.

this probably wont work, but at least the clutch will feel a bit better.

also check for stupid things like the carpet hasnt moved and is preventing the clutch being depressed.

PS, that inch of movement is fine. well, its not what i would want, but i have it and my clutch is hunky dory.

if thats doesnt work, just make a few notes over then next few days, like when it happens, all gears affected? only when stationry, only changing down, hot engine, cold engine, after long distance? first thing in the day etc.

well the 3 i use are all around me (lyme regis). when i lived in exeter i used to take my orion si130 to pinehoe garage, on the pinehoe estate. i know the two buisness partners split up, but the shorter one is still there. they do alot of vans etc so a hydrolic clutch wouldnt be to much bother, he's a good bloke.
of you have white horse 4x4 on tedburn road, next to the white horse scrappy.

do us a favor and stear clear of the stealership on matford, their a bunch of muppets there.
