I'm thinking of trying out one of the cheaper chips available on ebay in an attempt to increase the economy of my Freelander 1 Td4 (not much I can do with the 110 so I want to have a go with the Freelander). Just wanted to know if anyone had any experience with this, and whether I need to consider uprating anything else like the intercooler or fitting silicone hoses?. I'm not really interested in the power increase and so won't be driving it hard, I just want to improve economy, so is it neccesary to uprate these?. Any advice appreciated.

Chipped mine about three years ago with a Roveron chip.It made no difference save your money.Whilst towing a caravan on holiday last year my Freelander stopped refused to start in the middle of a busy highstreet.Turned out to be the b>>>>dy chip!!

Got TD5Alive to remap my 2004 Freelander, it gave it a bit more power but not as much as the remap on the Disco's. Still think a remap is worth the money if it's done right, but a chip that only fools the ECU as far as I'm concerned is a total waste of time.

When I bought my second Disco I bought a chip off EBay but it made no difference, got TD5Alive to remap it and I have never looked back.

Thanks to you all for your responses. I think I'll forget the chip and just go for cleaning the EGR valve and changing the crankcase filter on the next service.

hi I tried one of those of the shelf chips and they are OK but take more fuel and you will be replacing your turbo hoses more regular and all of the intakes will be covered in fuel i took mine of

I recently fitted a Bluespark module which seemed to put a bit more zip into my TD4's lower rev range and has not hurt fuel consumption as far as I know.

*edit* 40mpg on my last tank full and no problems at all - much nippier than before!

The Synergy chip sold by rover ron are crackin, but need setting up properly, loads of people buy em and then moan about em. Its because ya have to spend time setting em up properly. Get the chip follow the set up instructions properly check maf sensor is ok, Blank the egr off, KnN air filter, change the pcv valve make sure its the propa BMW one and you will see a big difference!!!

Im use to quite quick cars normally, so when I got my TD4 it was a bit of a shock to the system. So after a bit of research I gave the old girl a full engine service good job too as the crank case breather filter was clogged up with crap.
I then fitted an EGR block off followed by a CR2 common rail tuning box which I run on setting No5 as No9 was a bit too mental but the best improvement was putting 2stroke oil in the diesel (mineral not synthetic and the cheaper the better) mixed at a ratio of 200 to 1 eg. 20lts fuel to 100ml 2 stroke, big difference within 10-15 miles .just had MOT done and the guy said he hadn't seen such good emissions. Now she's good for 115 mph+ and got plenty of mid range grunt. Never thought i'd get this excited over an oil burner.
