If anyone actually cares about the law regarding exhaust noise I would suggest you check with a police officer or other appropriate information service before doing the mod. The laws on exhaust noise have changed recently and a quick scan around t'net suggests that some - or all - of the following now apply.

1) An exhaust may not be modified to be louder than the 'standard' configuration of the vehicle at production,

2) There are actual db levels that could cause an offence to be construed

3) Certain restrictions exist on the type and nature of exhaust fitted.

As for passing an MOT being a sign of 'approval' I believe it's the other way round, as it were. It's now possible to fail an MOT because of exhaust noise, regardless of the actual condition of the exhaust system. This doesn't mean that a pass is a cert of the exhaust being OK, merely that the tester didn't fail it which isn't the same thing.

As with many such laws, it seems there's a lot of wooliness in the regs with terms such as 'excessive' being bandied around which are, of course, subjective issues. Interestingly, the local council could also potential issue an ASBO if local residents complained!!

Its no louder than a motorbike, its a 300tdi not a V8! unless you cut the exhaust back off by the manifold it will still be quiet in comparison.

iv got a standard front pipe on my 300 and then it go's into a 3" bore straight thru system wi a stack up the back of the truck cab.and yes it does sound like a tractor,but i like tractors and the sound thi mek so to me its a lovely noise!

You should hear my twin cam straight 6 through 2 cherry bombs! Sounds mean!

Too many years ago to count I was driving down the M1 in my AH Sprite and the exhaust manifold snapped just above the downpipe. Now THAT was loud

Not as loud as the honda 6 with open megas I once saw at the TT many years ago

Oooh, if we is going for loud then me Suzi X7 with swarbricks riding from Sussex to Morecombe on the way to the TT was fooking loud.
