It's a Disco 300TDi and When idling it chatters/rattles untill the clutch is dipped and it sounds fine.

Had a couple of people say different things. One said prop shaft rubbers and another said something to do with the clutch.

It had a new clutch plate in before I bought it but a mate suggested it should have had a couple of other things on the clutch done at the same time and was likely the cause of the noise.

Any ideas?

Clutch release bearing/thrust bearing.

How long's it been doing it for? It'll probably be fine for thousands of miles yet, but will need to replaced at some point.

beat me to it here langers with another bang on !!!diagnosis
me slitty used to do that did me friggin head in but drove it for well over 4000 miles like that till it needed a new clutch and just did the thrust bearing while i was at it :D:D:D:D

That sounds like what my mate said too.
Has been doing it since I bought it a good few months ago.

How hard a job is that? and is it expensive?
I'm no amazing diy mechanic but can get by with a Haynes usually and I'll have a mate help out on it who is half tidy.

Thanks guys :)

EDIT: ok its cheap http://www.paddockspares.com/ftc5200-clutch-release-bearing.html
Also, are there any other parts that I could/should change while I'm at it?

Leave it and live with it as it's not going to do any damage, and will carry on working for at least a few tens of thousands of miles!

If you want to change it, take off the front and back spinny things that go to the axles, drop the gearbox, change the bearing and then put it all back together again!

Simples :D

lol I dunno what to do now.. think I'll leave it till I really have to!

I just checked and it had a new clutch kit about 6 months ago...surely that would include the release bearing? thinking hellbeck could be right..

9 times out of 10 it will be the release brg, but friction disc is also possible.

If a complete clutch kit was fitted 6 months ago I would say bearing is even more likely the culprit, unless of course it was a Britpart kit, in which case it could be absolutely anything rattling :D

this problem with rattle at idle was a big problem 10 years or more ago it is the springs in clutch that cause it ,increasing idle speed was one method ,clutch plates were modified to stop this ,it often recurs now when h/d clutches or some other makes are fitted ,often goes away in time ,its not release bearing if its rattle that goes when idle raised or clutch pedal pressed, relacing frition plate is only cure if it doesnt settle, its this effect that makes dual mass flywheels necessary on newer engines

Mine has exactly the same thing and thought it was the release bearing, thanks for clearing this up!
It has got alot noiser since it went under water on Sunday?!?!
Will it quieten down again?

Mine also had a genuine LR clutch kit fitted 6 months ago

Not necessarily true, release bearings do stop rattling when clutch is depressed as they're pushed up against the pressure plate.

No way is it the clutch bearing, it's the plate as jamesmartin said.
I have had the same problem on all the vehicles fitted with the L77/R380 gearbox.
:)

That's your experience, mine is that with a rattling noise which disappears with the clutch depressed has always been the release bearing. That is both on my own vehicles and others too...

No point in arguing about it, he's got some good suggestions now to check out and hopefully will report back with the results ;)

there is one final posibility the shoe cup thingy has disintegrated on the end of the clutch controll arm and the slave cylinder thus gaining play / movement on the thrust bearing
