How many spares do you carry in your Landy

  • I have enough spares to build another landy, just in case

Following on from 110s comments in the WTF thread. What is your opinion of carrying spare parts/wheels etc in your vehicle.

Do you think this encourages Landys to attention seek and break down just because they can.

Or do you carry nothing then they know that breaking down is not an option
 
I carry a couple of bits, spare wheels (obviously) spare inner tube, a UJ and a pair of wheel bearings, I also carry fluids for everything, socket set, spanners, trolley jack, and various other tooly bits like hammers, screwdrivers and box spanner (for Bearings)

cable ties, gaffa tape, various screws, elec connectors, bit o choc bloc, ptfe tape and a couple of lengths of flex I can strip down or use collectively as a get me home electrical bodge, one piece long enough to go from the battery to the fuel solenoid should the worst come to the worst.

Winter I also carry a spade, sleeping bag and camp stove, mess tin, and water, coffee, mug, and some ready meals

Summer;

Spare wheel, jack, torch, tools, blanket, water, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, wellies, hi viz gear.

Winter:

As above plus;

Box containing 2 x sleeping bags, food, stove, water, coffee, spare phone and other bits n pieces.

Shovel

Sand

Really need to take all this stuff! Ill take a socket set if im going more than 60 miles.

Id rather get recovered home and repair in the comfort of my driveway.

Laning/Offroad is a different story however
 
Tool box with everything but a hammer,

Jerry Can,
20ltr water container,
Various tapes and velcro,
Haynes manual,
old alternator (because I havent taken it to the tip yet)

24hr Army rations from a mate and a Bush Knife.
 
Spare wheel, standard jack, bottle jack, Halfrauds special tool kit, tyre compressor, wheel bearings, torque wrench, breaker bar, 12v inspection lamp and rechargeable L.E.D. inspection lamp, head torch.

Then standard LandRover tool kit

Hammer,
WD40,
Duct tape.

ooo forgot me three foot length of 3mm copper wire
 
Wheel-change kit, jump leads, rope, oils, water, couple of useful tools, torch, glow sticks, towel (always know where your towel is, especially if your Land Rover leaks :(), night-out gear and an RAC* card.

More if I'm away for the weekend.

Plus winter kit (shovel, brush, thermos, blanket etc.) in winter.

*You may wish to use an alternative breakdown service

Do some of you have a spare car following you as you clearly don't have any room left in the landy for anything other than spares :eek:

I have a spare wheel - but took the jack out and the wheel wrench as I could no more get the spare wheel off the back to change it by the side of a road than I could fly to the moon - so that's an AA job - but come back to the adage - one puncture in 29 years

I have lots of things to keep me warm and a torch and a book and a pkt of fruit and nuts and a red bull in the cubby in the event of needing to wait for the recovery services

Only time i've ever broken down where i could have done with a spare is when the belt went (dont know what belt - and certainly couldnt have repaired it if i had a spare anyway ) but AA took me to my landy garage and got it sorted there .

If Im out and about daily driving - I coudnt fix it anyway , with or without spares so its an AA job . And if Im laning - the guys Im out with have tools and stuff and Ive never had a problem then anyway ....but Ive seen them work out very ingenious ways to get down from remote locations up mountains to a point where AA could recover them ...so I have great faith in their ability to sort something .

Just think where do you draw the line with spares - think its useful if you can do your own roadside repairs but whilst I know I could remove a prop shaft to get me home i - ( as I know how ) you know what i'd rather be recovered any day
